View Full Version : Possible to use DVD2AVI, Avisynth, Virtualdub?

In the DivX4-Guide on how to make an avi from DVD Doom9 mentions the combination VIRTUALDUB/AVISYNTH as very userfriendly in a headline.
Well, below there isn't a description on how to do it... is that a typo and means FLASK/AVISYNTH?
I can't for the life of me find a guide on how to do avisynth-frameserving in the guides, mostly because it's not optimally organized and doesn't have neither global index nor search function. Sorry for the rant. I found tons of useful info that helped me in the past. :)
Can anybody explain to me, though, how to frameserve from DVD2AVI (1.82 with resize) with avisynth to VirtualDub so I can use the speed of avisynth and the filters of VirtualDub?
Thanks in advance!

To make everything clear :
Dvd2avi 1.82 : the resize code is only available if you use "Save Avi" in the file menu. The resize code was not added to the VFP plugin or the mpeg2dec filter for avisynth. The mpeg2dec dll was done using dvd2avi v1.76 and was not changed afterward.
The main advantage of using avisynth (with mpeg2dec.dll) is to avoid some colorspace conversion that was done with the VFP plugin (making encoding faster). So if you plan to use avisynth to speed up your encoding, you can only use avisynth filters (YUV filters) and use Virtualdub in fastrecompress mode (to avoid the RGB conversion). The drawback of this method is you can't use Virtualdub filter anymore (Vdub filters only work in RGB).
Try to read Doom9's guides, they are very clear.

Dear Vlad59,
thank you for your response! Although you didn't answer my question ("how to...") I have finally found the approriate page in Doom's guides after searching *All* the pages at random. Well, who'd have thought that it would be called MPEG2DEC instead of AVISYNTH
Doom9, can't you please make your web searchable? There is so much useful info there but it is well hidden sometimes!
Vlad59, can you clarify one thing for me: If I saved a DVD2AVI project and frameserved it with AVISOURCE instead of MPEGSOURCE to VirtualDub (is that possible?), could I keep the resizing settings of DVD2AVI and still do fast recompress?
Thanks!

The only function usable with a D2v file is mpegsource.
Now, the fastest way to resize is with avisynth (BilinearResize and BicubicResize) and there is no way to produce a resized d2v file.
But you should try GordianKnot because it does everything for you and without loosing speed. There is also a very good guide for this wonderful tool :

Hope this helps

I don't have support for perl/php on some servers so I can't implement a search.. furthermore you'd have to program a search first and I don't really have time for that

Well, it is DVD2AVI forum... I must say that fastest way is to encode in DVD2AVI 1.82... It is possible to make 2 pass DivX 4.12 encoding with some scripts automatically.
So if you don't need some special filters (or want work in Nandub), you can do all in DVD2AVI - resize and encoding AVI.
MPEG2AVI encodes with same speed practically, but is little harder to use.
