Hello all.
I almost hate to ask this, but I've searched generally on google and through these forums and didn't see this topic addressed specifically....
I recently purchased a Sony (don't remember the model :S) DVD burner. It plays everything fine, but I'm now 0-5 backing up movies. It appears that the drive is getting read errors about half way through the backup process.
I've tried using AnyDVD/DVDDecryptor, as well as DVDFab, both with the same results.
I was hoping some of the folks out there who just love their DVD drive and have had very good success backing up movies would please share their drive information!
Thanks so much.

I'm quite satisfied with my NEC ND-4551A, especially with the region-free hack. :) There's a number of reasons not to buy from Sony these days.

Chris - sorry to say but this is pretty much what rule 12 is all about. You will get lots of subjective opinions, all based on people's own experiences.
If you have read errors, you might try cleaning the drive. Or if it is still in warranty, RFM it.
Anyways, this is not a Decrypting issue - so, I might transfer the thread to DVD burning.
Good luck.

Thanks for the input, and I apologize for the post to the wrong forum. I debated which was most appropriate, and still got it wrong :(
I had heard that sony did things in the hardware of their drives to help prevent copying, but wasn't sure of the validity of that.
Thanks again!

Hi!I had heard that sony did things in the hardware of their drives to help prevent copying, but wasn't sure of the validity of that.That's nonsense ;>}
1) How long ago did you purchase your SONY burner?
2) What is the model number? Examine all sides and top and bottom)
3) Did you purchase it as a new item, with a manufacturer's warranty?
4) What brand, "MID" (Manufacturer's I.D.), and format (+R or -R) of burnable media are you using?
5) What speed are you burning at?
6) What burning software are you using?
7) Do you have prior experience successfully burning DVDs?

Thanks for the response :)
I'll have to wait till I get home tonight and I can get all that info for you. Here's what I do know:
1. About 2 months.
3. New In Box from Fry's
4. Not even getting to the burn process, just trying to rip it to the HD is where the failure is happening.
5. Not there yet, but 8x for -R, 2x for -RW
6. AnyDVD/DVDDecryptor and also tried DVDFab
7. Yup. Lots and lots with my old DVD drive that finally gave out. I figured pretty much any new drive would be ok, until I started having these issues :)
Some of the movies I've tried to back up are: Ice Age 2, Monster House, Talladega Nights.
More info to come!
Thanks again.

Not even getting to the burn process, just trying to rip it to the HD is where the failure is happening. That's a very different story - and the "mystery" is readily solved!
Try ripping your DVD(s) using the easy to use "RipIt4me" package (Incorporates RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter, FixVTS, and DVD Shrink). You can download this excellent freeware from:
www.ripit4me.org
While you're at that site, read the excellent "how to" tutorial...

I'll definitely give Ripit4me a try :)
Thanks!
The perplexing thing though is that everything worked fine for me for years with my old drive, just with the new one things fell apart in the rip process.
I don't *think* it's a software thing, but hey, I'll try anything ;)

Sounds like coincidence in timing - You're no wtrying to rip DVDs that have the latest versions of "ARccOS" and/or "RipGuard" protection schemes...

You could be right. I do keep my AnyDVD up to date, so if they can handle the latest ArccOS and RipGuard stuff, I should be able to also. Can't remember off the top of my head if AnyDVD reports those encryptions as "removed" or not though :)
Anyway, last question you asked was my model number. It's a Sony DVDRW DRU-830A.
Thanks again for all your help!
