So far what I have gathered around miscelaneous forums through WWW and this forum (also info is more than month old) :
---------------------------------
BDAV= format for home made HD videos
BDMV= format for pre-recorded HD film

The Samsung BD-P1000 & the Panasonic BD-10 CAN play BDMV (so the ripped film) with menu & everything, I do all the test and I can confirm it.
The PS3 can't player BDMV, and is not for incompatibility but it's a Sony decision.
So, the reason your PS3 cannot play your burned BD-R or BD-RE disc is because the Firmware isn't supporting it yet. We are on Firmware 1.5, and this feature won't be supported until at least 2.0.
I noticed someone mentioned it worked with the Samsung BD player, and that is great because the PS3 slowly but surely takes everything every other player can do and does it better with Firmware upgrades.

Samsung BD-P1000: first firmware plays BDMV. 1.1 & 1.2 don't play BDMV. And now the latest play BDMV. It's a politic reason.
------------------------
So lets do the list :
1. Samsung BD-P1000 (wirh the very first, original firmware 1.0 and with latest firmware ?.???)
2. Panasonic BD-10 (with firmware ?.???)
3. ....

dunno if this can be usefull
bd-re tdk 2.1 on pal samsung dbp-1000(fw 1.0) and pal ps3 with 1.5 and 1.6 firmware.
tested with bdmv, bdav, m2ts on data disk.
no go for both with bdmv/av.only ps3 played m2ts on data disk.
tested also on Pal Sony BDP-S1 (i've tested it in a shop, is not out yet for customers), same result as before. no go for all media.
power dvd plays fine all the disk when popped in the blueray drive.

checking the samsung pal manual, and using internet for the sony manual i've discovered bd-r and -re disk playback are NOT supported.....
sony i think resolved this issue with latest firmware, but samsung pal player has only 1.0 firmware available, so?
do all the europeans need to buy the player in us?

p.s. using Matshita UJ-210S blueray burner on acer notebook to burn media.
