View Full Version : Plextor may start to charge for new AACS keys on their bluray-drives?

According to wikipedia's AACS page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Access_Content_System#Hardware_products), Plextor may start to charge for new AACS keys every 18 months. It is still unclear how much the new key will cost, but forcing people to upgrade their hardware and make them PAY for it is just not right. This really makes me hope that it's only Plextor that's shooting themselves on the foot and that other manufacturers will provide their key upgrades for free.

Hardware products

AACS is implemented within Plextor's PX-B900A (http://www.plextor.com/english/products/px-b900a.html) drive. Accompanying the drive is also this notice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PX-B900A-notice.jpg). It is unclear whether Plextor and/or WinDVD/Ulead software (included with the drive) is initiating and perhaps profiting from this charge, or if this is required by licensing AACS into product capabilities. Some argue it is grossly inappropriate that after you purchase a $900+ piece of hardware, that sometime in the future you would need to purchase a key to play back new Blu-ray Movies. This usage restriction is not indicated on the outside of the container, you must open it in order to discover it.
