Anyone got experience of this standalone player? I'm interested in these questions below:
1) Does it properly support packed bitstream divx/xvid's?
2) Subtitle support? Some dvd-players seems to display extremly small subtitles, how's this one?
3) Long filenames? Are DivX files displayed with long filenames? My old Pioneer cuts of after a few characters and this causes confusion with attached subtitle files (if you're watching episodes for example)
EDIT: 4) Can DivX-files be resumed just like a dvd by pressing the play-button if you had the machine powered off (this "feature" seems to be rare with DivX-players, that instead restarts the previously played file)
Let me know if you have any experience with this player.
Thanks in advance

This Pioneer,
Have the same technology with my Pioneer DVD Micro Home Theater XVMF5DVD except in SACD/DVDA and HDMI upscaler. So it support:
1. Subtitle => shows medium, not small not big but carefull with converter, DivX 6.2 Converter seems not good working with this player.
2. Longfilename (but try to reduce at 8 character). Anyway I can write full "Superman_Returns"
3. Yes it restart, but I heard it can be resolved with firmware crack?
4. Support big file, I use Superman Returns DivX file at 3.5GB and play perfectly, even at 4332 bitrate still perfect.
5. Tested with my friends Pioneer HTZ656 Home Theater (use the same tech with 696AV include HDMI). It support very good upscale up to 720p. Seems at 1080i
looks not stable, only works with some DVD (perhaps macrovision factor).

What I have seen in shop, this player gave very detail sharp picture on Pioneer Plasma series. Not sure because Plasma it self or what. But moved into Sony Bravia V series, it show the same picture quality. But it is very high sensitive with HDMI cables quality, try use at least HDMI 1.1 cables. Better stick with Monster HDMI400 or Belkin PureAV Silver series or something similar like Supra or others. Don't use cheap low grade HDMI cables as will show unstable and jagged pictures.

How about packed-bitstreams Xvid/DivX?

How about packed-bitstreams Xvid/DivX?

Not sure, never test with packet bitstream. But I think this player only support simple profile FourCC.

How about packed-bitstreams Xvid/DivX?I dare say it will perform the same as any other Pioneer player fitted with a MediaTek chip-set.

If the DV-696AV is DivX certified it will support DivX with 1B-VOP (maybe 2B-VOP) with packed bit-stream. With regard to Xvid, my Pioneer DV 575A seems to be able to play files with up-to 2B-VOP, with or without packed bit-stream without any issues.

Cheers

My old Pioneer 585A does not support packed bitstreams (looks like shit). DivX/Xvid support is quite buggy aswell, sometimes the movie just stops/looses sync and I have to start/stop the movie to get it working again.. However subtitles looks good (compared to my Pioneer DVR-540H) where the subs are extremly small.. :(

My old Pioneer 585A does not support packed bitstreams (looks like shit)...So when you generated these "shit" looking encodes with packed bit-stream. How many B-VOPs did you use?

no idea, these are files I've downloaded. They are reported to have "packed bitstream" according to mpeg4modifier. The don't work properly on my 585 or dvr-540h.

no idea, these are files I've downloaded. LOL.... Well in that case I would not be so quick to blame the player....

You don't have a hope in hell in maintaining any form of quality control if choose to download files instead of encoding them yourself

Hmmm,
That's made clear. As you cannot play in your DVD player, perhaps it is in the movie it self. To know details what is your DVD player support, then try convert many kind of form from your DVD movie, no need all film just Cinema/TV preview that only take arround 10 minutes duration. Test it with every configuration that you might know. And see it by your self. I know my Home Theater is really great after tested it with so many configuration (but not with XviD yet) so when I play using material download from internet, I know it is from the film not my player.

My Pionner DV-585/DVR-540 plays AVI's with packed bitstream, but the result is very jerky (which seems to be the most common problem on DVD-players that lack support for packed bitstream according to google..)

Look up the OPPO players. They seem to play everything & they come with a HDMI cable.

Look up the OPPO players. They seem to play everything & they come with a HDMI cable. And these players are also fitted with same MediaTek chip-sets as the Pioneer players. So effectively, they are all capable of handling any given MPEG-4 source in the same way...

Hi all, just a quick question. I have the 696 and it plays pretty much everything I put in it (it was made region free at the dealer) except some XVID/DIVX files. I have tried mPEG4 modifier and that has unpacked the bitstream but then I keep getting the same error about the resolution not being supported. I have a SAMSUNG LE32M61 that is connected to the player via a HDMI cable. Now I know the player 'upscales' but this problem
appears to be because the file resolution is under (512x384?) the recomened size?
I have tried searching the net for a solution but no dice, you guys are my last hope....
TIA,
Bobsen

Uhmm,
Actually size doesn't matters, as long there is enough bitrate. I have been resize VCD movie into DVD size and boost their bitrate into as high as possible, but due to poor quality in movie, it shows terrible picture rather than the original one.
