i just recently started encoding svcds. after a couple of weeks of researching various sites i have put together a process that works and seems to produce good quality svcds.

smartripper - rip dvd
dvd2avi - create .d2v file
vob2audio - create .wav file
tmpgenc - encode .d2v and .wav file
nero - burn

i've done two svcd encodings and have been satisfied with the results.
a couple of things i have notice about my process as compared to others is the frameserving and demuxing/remuxing of the .mpg file. i don't understand why the need for frameserving when tmpgenc can read a .d2v file and .wav file. doom9's guide does mention that tmpgenc might not multiplex the file correctly (av-synch?), but having only done two encodings i probably haven't run into that problem yet.

thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

Hi travis,

I strongly recommend using bbmeg for muxing svcd streams.
TMPGEnc seems to have some problems in this case. This can give you some strange problems during playback, e.g. frame drops in WinDVD.

I use VCDEasy for authoring my svcds. It analyses your MPEG2 (SVCD ready) streams and shows you all "errors". Check the LOGs ...

Muxing SVCDs with TMPGEnc always gave me BCD Fields errors.
In this case you will get frame drops in WinDVD during playback (always at the same stream position !!).

Further you can get A/V sync problems, especially at chapter entry points ...

BTW : TMPGEnc works great for VCD muxing ....
