View Full Version : DV capture in vdub?

i got a pinnacle pctv usb2 capture device.

i usually capture with either huffyuv for best quality or 1-pass xvid
on the fly.
i sometimes want to capture 2 shows/movies on the same day. if
thats the case, i cant choose huffyuv because i dont have enough
hdd space and the encoding takes bout 10 hours (2pass xvid).
so i capture as xvid on the fly, but that i can only do with a max
resolution of 352x288.
my device supports 352x288, 640x480 and 720x576. so what im
looking for is a codec i could capture in 720x576 or at least 640x480 (though thats 30fps and im in a pal country :/) with the
file for a 90min clip not being bigger then a couple of gigs (under 10).
so i figured id try DV. i installed the panasonic DV codec. its in
my vdub alright, but i cant choose it for capture.

YUV2 seems to be the only data format my device supports. is
it then not possible to capture as DV? or am i missing something..

is there any other codec i should give a try?

i would use the software that came with the pinnacle card and
capture as mpeg, but that software (PMC) only supports resolutions
of 352x288 or the wierd one 352x576 (called long-dvd).

sorry if this is 2 much to ask. im trying to keep it simple, but its
all so confusing lol..

thanks in advance :)

I'd use ffdshow's MJPEG at highest quality in YUY2 colorspace.

IIRC mjpeg isnt free, is it?

and i have no idea how i could use ffdshow in vdub :(

You should be able to enable ffdshow in VDub when installing ffdshow. Just get a recent build, there's a thread dedicated to them at the New a/v codecs forum section. ffdshow doesn't cost anything so its MJPEG codec doesn't cost anything either;)

doh! need to try that :D

thanks for the info :)

edit: found the topic, but that stuff does my head in. there a ton of different versions and
i wouldnt know where to start. i dont want to mess up what i have.. :(

ok, after reading though a ton of posts about ffdshow-tryouts, i have
to say thats not what i want.
my vdub is 100% stable. never crashes, never get audio out of sync or anything.
everyone seems to complain bout ffdshow being unstable to capture
vs. stand-alone codecs, so back to my original question.

how can i capture as DV in vdub if thats even possible.. thanks

Where do you see the complaints? When I had an analog capture card, I used ffdshow all the time.

Just download the stable generic build at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941. You can always uninstall it if it doesn't work for you.

For DV, you need YV12.

the complaints are on the ffdshow-tryouts forum, not in english though.

ah thanks for clearing that up. no DV for me then :/

im just worried that installing this will mess with the codecs i have
installed. e.g. will it change any xvid settings in vdub, since
this ffdshow has changes done to xvid (and all other codecs).

thats why i was rather looking for a SA codec.

sorry for being a pain in the butt lol

ffdshow doesn't touch any other codecs so it is safe to use.

sigh..

something DID change.

my files are getting now 950mb in filesize instead of 700mb.

^^^this gives me a 950mb file instead of 702mb. i used this
over 150 times in the past, now its f*** up.

ffdshow has nothing to do with your XviD encoder settings.

how about cedocida dv kodek? (free)

@boulder.. i dont know and btw. didnt try to sound ungreatfull.

i captured a show with mjpeg and its pretty much exactly what i
was looking for in terms of filesize vs. cpu load during 720x576 capture.

i found a workaround for the problem. when i only encode the video and do a direct stream copy for the audio, then do a
direct stream copy for the vid and compress the audio its the
right file size (700mb). when i do both in one go, its 950.
im still puzzled over this freak occurance and i didnt change
anything :O

@smok3.. afaik, theres no big difference between the panasonic DV codec and the cedocida one. if DV needs the device to
support YV12 and mine doesnt, then its not possible to capture DV as it would seem.

cedocida should also support yuy2 and rgb. why dont you try?
