View Full Version : Files encoded with MeGUI HQ profile not playable in QuickTime

I encoded a few videos in MeGUI using the HQ profiles. The output video can be played on all kind of players (Windows media player, Windows Media Player Classic, KMPlayer and Nero Showtime), but not QuickTime 7.

How do I make the file playable in QuickTime?

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken Quicktime doesn't do high profile, maybe not even all of main profile. All of Sharktooths HQ profiles use high profile, so you would have to manually alter the profiles and deactivate all the high profile options. Alternatively CE-Mainprofile and the Ipod profile should work in Quicktime.
Also if you use 5.1 sound in mp4 Quicktime won't play the audio and it can't play back HE-AAC correctly either (it will play back but sound crappy, because only the LC part is decoded).

Hi nurbs, thanks for the reply. I will give the CE-Mainprofile a try when I get home tonight.

What are the main difference between the CE and HQ profiles?
The HQ here means high quality, right? Does that mean HQ profile always produce better quality video than the main profiles?

Is High profile only intended for encoding HD content? My video source is MPEG-2 (720x480 SD) recoreded from dish network satellite, which profile type is better for my video source? I want the quality to be as high as possible.

High profile enables 8x8 transform, lossless encoding, cqms and other colorspaces. Maybe some other things as well. The 8x8 should help on any source regardless of resolution. The rest is probably not that interesting to you.

I can't really help you with Sharktoots profiles because I haven't used them in a long time.

If filesize doesn't matter to you you should take a look on the crf mode of x264. With that you can do encodes with relatively constant quality compared to the source, but you won't know for sure how big the file gets before its finished.

edit:
I forgot here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=102609) you can find information about what options quicktime supports. Might be a bit outdated. My opinion: If there is not a really good reason why the files should be playable on quicktime don't bother with it. It is an incredibly slow decoder and has some annoying bugs. Just search for quicktime and x264 and you will see what I mean.

Also I'm not 100% sure quicktime can play CE-Mainprofile, its just a guess.
