About half the time I try to burn a DVD, at some point during the burning process the drive starts whirring like crazy and I get a garbled error message and a useless disc. I've tried it on two different programs (Nero and DVDSanta). I'm assuming this means the drive is shot, but I'm wondering if any of you know something I can do to increase the probability of completing a disc, or what specifically is going wrong here. Is there some other program I should try? Thanks in advance.

Hi!I'm assuming this means the drive is shotBased on your description, this sounds like a likely possibility.

Before giving up on the burner, however, you might want to try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on it. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

You may also have a problem with media - as has been posted many, many times before, never exceed half the rated burn speed of drive or media, whichever is slower, or if using DL media, use Verbatim. It's not likely a different program would make any difference, but you can always try ImgBurn since it's free.
