Assuming that I'm able to decrypt my HD DVD collection to my hard drive while removing all the HDCP protection. What are the hardware requirements to be able to play the material using PowerDVD? The reason I ask is because I want to purchase an XBox HD DVD add on but only if my current system is able to play without lag. Thanks.

You can use the HD Advisor by Cyberlink to determine some min.
I run a AMD 3800 2.0 X2 AM2, with a 8800GTS, and I play them fine.
I think the most important factor is somthing with a onboard h264 mpeg2 and vc-1 decoding built in on the gpu.

I think the Cyberlink Specs are a little over the top.
I have no problems running HD Material (MPEG2, VC1, 1080p) on my "old" Athlon XP 2600+ Radeon9600XT 1GB RAM and on my MacBook with even integrated graphics.

I can tell you my old 6800GT and AMD 3000 Barton 2.0
Couldn't do it.

well, here is the story.
My old system (p4 2.8 > 3.4Ghz with Radeon 9600SE) was able to play for about an hour, after that PDVD would crash.
I replaced Radeon with 9600GT AGP.
Now it plays all right from the beginning to the end but playback is not smooth on some movies, especially Waterworld.
On the other hand my Dell XPS m1210 with Core Duo 1.83 and 7400 nvidia go plays everything fine.
So I am going to assemble a brand new machine, Dual Core 2 e4300, 7600GT PCI E, 2GB DDR667 RAM and overclock the hell out of it.
I really hope it will be adequate this time around.
I am trying to output max 1080p through both VGA and HDMI.
I believe this thread belongs to the PC hardware section btw.

Isn't the AGP 6800 the one that's completely unable to use Purevideo? That's probably why.
Thread moved.

I just got an Xbox360 HD-DVD drive last night and manged to rip and play the included King Kong DVD using PDVD 7.2. I noticed some obvious skipping, along with some choppy playback. Any thoughts on the culprit? My system specs are:
AMD X2 4200+
7600GT
MSI K8NGM2-FID
The HD-DVD is ripped to a 5400rpm HDD on a NAS box, connected to my HTPC via GigE. I'm driving a Toshiba DLP RPTV, connected via DVI->HDMI at a resolution of 1216x676@60Hz.
I didn't have a lot of time to experiment last night. I think my system should be powerful enough to play this smoothly, and I find it hard to believe either the HDD or network throughput wouldn't be high enough. Is it possible that the non-standard resolution could be causing problems?
Cheers,
erikt
