View Full Version : Dumb Question_Problem with Alien (theatrical and DC on one disk)

I have Alien (from the Quadrilogy set, Region 2, purchased in UK) and Alien has the original theatrical and the directors cut on the same disk. Ripit4me-Rebuilder Pro 1.21-imgburn all seemed to go OK (in movie only mode on Rebuilder) but the finally produced disk had tiny skips/pauses throughout and did not play the DC version, only the original theatrical. Now for the really dumb questions:
1. Can I set up Rebuilder to process just the directors cut?
2. Are both versions on this disk? Although I did not try it, can I use the "angle" button on the remote to switch between the versions if they are indeed both there?
3. What about the little skips/pauses? Is this symptomatic of inlterleaved backups? Or is it just a bad burn problem again? I used a TDK disc (not wanting to waste one of my Taiyo Yudens) on a Plextor PX-760A 1.06 burner in a Sarotech "MyBox" USB case. Burn speed was 8X. Other TDK and TY burns are perfect so far.

It certainly isn't symptomatic of interleaved discs -- as they are pretty common. I can't really say whether it is a disc issue -- but is could be. Are you playing it back on a standalone player, or through the computer. I've found that some software players just don't do well with interleaved sources.

It is a standalone player, an LG V181 to be exact (a DVD-VCR combo bought in Australia). This disc is the first to show playback problems since I started using Rebuilder 1.21 Pro on this new computer a couple of weeks ago. I read somewhere that the only factors really involved are the burner (and firmware) and the medium. That author said that burning software and all other software used in the chain doesn't matter.
I hope I am not experiencing another onset of burning problems again. I am using a Plextor PX-760A (supposedly Plextor's best) on the latest firmware (1.06) and (most of the time) Taiyo Yuden 16x discs. The only other variable I can really play with is the burn speed. I have been using 8X with good results up until now. That particular Aliens disc was burned on a TDK disc as I wasn't sure I had the DC or original theatrical on the build, so I didn't want to waste a Taiyo Yuden.
To be honest, it is really starting to make more sense just to buy two copies of every DVD and store one and play the other, with all the effing around I've done with burners, software, discs etc.

Mount the image with Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) and play it using a software dvd player. That'll give you a better idea of whether the problem is with the encode or the burn.

Yeah, and then run a Nero Quality scan on that disc, and after trying the mount, play the disc on the computer as DVD-ROM/DVD+-RW drives can be a little more forgiving than standalones.

@Got_the_DVD_Jones: does the Rebuilder output skip/pause even _before_ you burn it to a disc? i.e. when you playback from the harddrive.

I did this DVD (PAL UK version) in movie-only some time ago and had no problems.
I think I used DVD Decrypter to rip the entire DVD to a folder, then DVD Shrink in reauthor mode to save the director's cut to another folder without compression, keeping only the subtitles and sound I wanted.
Then I think I ran it through DVDRB set to burn with DVD Decrypter. It was some time ago but it worked ok.

Some software products to that with DVD sources under certain circumstances. I know Media Player does. That's true, I just noticed PgcEditPreview.exe skipping and stuttering on the ILVU cells of a dvdrebuilder'd Totoro R1 USA DVD (Disney). Playback on my standalone is fine though.
