I have recently bought 1 gig of memory (kingston) and on upon installing this I have found that the key is in the wrong position. It will not slot in properly any ideas on what is the proper memory for a Dell 3100 or is this just away for Dell to make more money out of the consumer as they have the only memory that fits.

Cheers Lequtus

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Kingston has a pretty good database on their website to help you pick the right type of memory for your particular hardware. You might want to verify that you did buy the correct type.

Also, there is a PC hard/software forum where such questions might be answered more quickly.

Dell does not have special memory for their computers. They use SDRAM like everyone else, but there a There are 3 main types of memory out there:

1) SDR SDRAM (older machines - i.e. 5+ years)
2) DDR SDRAM (1-5 year old systems, especially AMD)
3) DDR2 SDRAM (all newer systems, some Intel systems as old as 4 years)

You need to use a program like CPU-Z to find out exactly what type and speed memory your system currently has, and use that to make an informed buying decision.

Good luck. Welcome to doom9 :D

According to that website I mentioned above, you could use DDR2-400 or -533 modules ...

NB: Better still, consult the system's manual.

You're probably trying to fit DDR memory into a PC100 or PC133 slot.
