I am trying to make a HDDVD with either avc or vc1 and burn it to DVD-R.
I wonder where do we find How do I calculate the bitrate to fit to a 8.5 GB DVD? Is there a calculator available?

Pretty rudimentary, but I guess it will do

It doesn't really matter what's going on the disc, just how much space it takes up. Therefore a standard bitrate calculator should do the trick
EDIT
Sorry I'm being an idiot! There's a perfectly good Bearson's bitrate calculator on the download section of the Doom9 site for you to use.
