It has been a long time that I do dvdrips.
I don't really know what them actually do?
Are they codecs like XviD?
I checked the doom9 guides. They seems to be just a program to encode XviD, DivX, h.264. Are they?
Thanks.

AutoGK is a 'one click' program to convert DVD --> AVI.
GuardianKnot is te same program, but needs hours working on setting it, instead.
From what I read, it seems that XviD is the codec most appreciated by the community.

I was guessing it's a converter tool, too. But what confused me was why in doom9 forum, AutoGK was assorted into "MPEG-4 and Codec" forum? Due to it isn't a codec. It is a converting tool which should be assorted in "Capturing and Editing Video" as same as virtualdub.
On top of that, what I researched about AutoGK is that it's just mixing virtualdubmod, avisynth, ...many required tools together. The majority convertor is still "virtualdubmod." So should be same as virtualdub forum.
Anyone know why?
Thanks for help.

GuardianKnot is te same program
That’s a common misconception. Gordian Knot and AutoGK both used to be developed by len0x, but they are completely different programs. They don’t share a single bit of code, they have completely different user interfaces and an equally different philosophy. AutoGK is a »nearly-1-click-tool« while GK uses the »let-the-user-setup-everything« approach.
The only thing that’s almost the same is the name. Unfortunately when choosing the name for AutoGK no one thought about the confusion this »Gordian Knot« in the name of the new app would create.
Both programs are encoding frontends, i.e. they provide a single user interface to control all the tool needed for an encoding.
The majority convertor is still "virtualdubmod." So should be same as virtualdub forum.
Anyone know why?
Well, only Doom9 himself could tell you exactly. It makes sense though because AutoGK and GK only use MPEG-4 encoders (Xvid, DivX, x264).

As Brother John said, AutoGK uses many tools (e.g., Lame, VirtualDubMod, Normalize, DGMPGDec, AviSynth, VobSub, DTSDec, Azid, MediaInfo, XviD).
Why should it restrict itself to VirtualDub forum?
All these tools give you a downsized but eminently watchable video file as a backup of your DVD. Use AGK, and after a few sessions you will want to say: hey, did I start a thread with these questions?
AutoGK and GK only use MPEG-4 encoders (Xvid, DivX, x264).
Does AutoGK use x264?

Does AutoGK use x264?
no (but we always hope in future...)

Don't get your hopes too high. Both programs are not actively developed anymore.

What I actually mean is since AutoGK is a converting tool, why it isn't categorized at "Capturing and Editing Video".
I didn't meant under virtualdub. I meant same as virtualdub since they both are same kind of tools.
It is now categorized at "MPEG-4 and Codec", but it isn't a codec.

AutoGK is an MPEG-4 converter - it cannot be used for capturing or editing, so it wouldn't make sense to categorize it as such.
