View Full Version : IMGBurn in reverse possible?

Background - I recently had occasion to use "ISOPuzzle" (A remarkable piece of freeware!) to successfully recover an otherwise partially unreadable, physically damaged, original DVD.
The program ultimately generates an .ISO image file. I know I can use ISOBuster, DVD Shrink, DaemonTools, etc. to extract the DVD "package" of files (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs) but, I wonder if there is a way to somehow use IMGBurn's "Build" mode to accomplish the same thing?

I wouldn't think so. ImgBurn is as its name suggests, it burns images.

... and files.
But I'm sure it cannot rip files from an ISO, as it's not a ripper. Even DVD Decrypter was unable to extract files from an ISO.

@r0lZ
Hi!
What DVD Decrypter can and can't do is irrelevant to my question. After all, DVD Decrypter didn't/doesn't have the capability of building an .ISO image file from a hard drive "package" of DVD files (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs)...

Of course, but DVD Decrypter is a ripper, and ImgBurn not.

IMHO, extracting files from an .ISO image file is not "ripping".
If "LIGHTNING UK!" shares my opinion, just as making an .ISO image file from a hard drive DVD "package" was added to "IMGBurn", perhaps the reverse can also be added...

IMHO, extracting files from an .ISO image file is not "ripping".Subtle nuance!
Anyway, ImgBurn can't "extract" files, as its purpose is exactly to do the opposite.

If "LIGHTNING UK!" shares my opinion, just as making an .ISO image file from a hard drive DVD "package" was added to "IMGBurn", perhaps the reverse can also be added... So this thread is basically a feature request?
You can always mount the .ISO in a virtual drive and "rip" it with DVD Decrypter.

Hmmm I'm lost!
You want to take an ISO image and then extract the files from it?
As CWR03 said, it's so much easier to mount it and access them via explorer.
Failing that, you have all the other programs you've already mentioned and you can add WinRar to that list too.
I shouldn't think there's much call for such a feature in ImgBurn.
It wouldn't be hard to add it though I would think - I mean, the file system parsing code is already all in there for verify mode when it can pick out which file a certain sector maps to.

And, in light of that, my thought was, why not make "IMGBurn" an even more useful tool, if all the required "pieces" are already in the program...

Because although the back end code might be in there, I still have to write another load of GUI stuff to display the files as a tree type structure and do all the extraction progress related stuff. It just doesn't really interest me.
If I really need to use a tool to do it (and not via DT and explorer) I'd use IsoBuster - they're already perfect for the job and there's nothing I could do to give me any 'edge' over them.
Sometimes it's best to keep things simple. ImgBurn does what it does and it does it (pretty) well.

So be it - although I seem to remember similar resistance "way back when" I originally suggested that it would be a good thing if DVD Decrypter could generate split .ISOs, so that those of us who at that time still had FAT32 drives could store our DVDs in .ISO format on our hard drives ;>}

Yeah but that suggestion (was it really you that suggested it?!) had a real purpose behind it, this one doesn't as it's already available in loads of other programs specifically designed for that sole purpose! :p

Het Setarip- I was in the same boat last week. I needed to unpack an ISO, and I don't use Daemon tools, since the copy protection on some games freaks out if you have it installed.
I sat there and played around with IMGBurn for a while before I figured out that it wouldn't do what a wanted.
And then I tried DVD Decrypter, which was sort of dumb on my part, I should have known that it would only rip a mounted ISO.
I ended up using WinRAR.
In conclusion, it would be cool if IMGBurn could unpack an ISO for you, but if Lightning doesn't want to bother, thats fine becuase Win RAR does the trick.

Yes. Winrar can do that.
It can Open the ISO (and only ISO) file and unpack the file you need
