Hello Doomers
TMPGEnc HD-MPEG2 how to?
I have been looking on this forum for a settings walk through for high end MPEG2 but not found one yet. Am I looking in the wrong place?
I have a 1920 1080 25p project and want to add a ac3 5.1 soundtrack to it so that I can create a single file for player to an HD projector.
I cannot find out much about all these new MPEG2 settings in the encoder. I usually ignore them with presets but there are none for this output format.
So far I have these settings
MPEG file output:
Stream : MPEG-2 Video
Profile & Level : MP@HL (what is this?)
Size: 1920 1080
AR: 1:1
F: 25 fps
Rate control mode: VBR 40000 30000 quality 100
VBV buffer size: (unknown????what should this be?)
Video system: PAL (should be unspecified or PAL?)
DC component precision 8 bit (what should this be?)
Display mode: progressive
Motion search precision: highest (with error correction)
Also I have my ac3 5.1 file already loaded but how do I get it into finished file? TMPGEnc says "It is possible to cut-edit such a format if this is included in the source file"
thanks remainz

The above free app will Mux HD Mpeg2. It does have a small bug - you have to manually enter the name of the .AC3 file in the audio field.
Choose the Mpeg2 settings button, and it should work for you. It has for me.

thanks
I think i have found a way in tmpgenc to do it also
but im still a little unsure about some of the above quieries

I have not personally tried an HD version of TMPEGEnc, but I do have a very old version that did do HD size encodings, so that's what I'll base my answer on:
MPEG file output:
Stream : MPEG-2 Video
Profile & Level : MP@HL (what is this?)
Size: 1920 1080
AR: 1:1
F: 25 fps
Profile & Level determines things like maximum bitrate, framerate, and size. For example, I believe that MP@ML supports up to 720x480 @ 29.97fps (not sure about bitrate). If you want to have settings above this, you need to select a higher P&L, which you have. MP@HL is what most of my HDTV captures are encoded with, so that should be sufficient here.
Size is ok.
AR should be set to 16:9 though. If you leave it at 1:1, then your video will be stretched to that aspect ratio on playback. 1920x1080 is a 16:9 ratio and so you should set the same thing when you encode. This is used on DVDs, since DVDs are usually encoded at 720x480, which is neither 4:3 or 16:9. However, whatever was set as the AR was set during encoding will determine what the video will look like when it is played back.
Rate control mode: VBR 40000 30000 quality 100
VBV buffer size: (unknown????what should this be?)
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the VBR setup for TMPEGEnc, but to me that sounds too high. HDTV in the US is limited to an overall bitrate (audio and video) to 20000 kbps, so I would suggest a maximum video bitrate of 20000 - (audio bitrate). Also, for quality I usually use between 25 and 30. Quality of 100 will be way to big, it would probably stay at a constant 40000 with your settings. Here's where you can try several values and see what looks good enough. I'd start with 25.
Video system: PAL (should be unspecified or PAL?)
DC component precision 8 bit (what should this be?)
Display mode: progressive
Motion search precision: highest (with error correction)
Not sure about video system, although if you are encoding at 25fps, more than likely your clip is from a PAL source, and so you probably made the right choice. DC component precision should be set all the way to 10 bits. From what I understand, higher bits = better quality, but slower (slightly) speed. As far as progressive vs. interlaced, that depends on your source. Where did you get this material from? Motion search precision, again the higher the better, but slower (more of a slowdown than with DC precision).
I'm not sure about muxing in AC3 audio though, that was beyond the scope of my program. I'm sure that everything else hasn't changed though.

Im still unsure about
VBV buffer size: (unknown????what should this be?)
Its default is 224 KB which Im sure is designed for normal DVD Mpeg2.
Should I double it?

My tool tip for that setting says:
Specify the target decoder's VBV buffer size. This should be an even number. If you put 0 here, a value will be chosen automatically.
I think if you put 0, you should be ok. Mine is set to 0 and I've never worried about it much. I found this (http://www.zenith.com/sub_hdtv/mpeg_tutorial/VBV.HTM) page which might give you more information.

The "standard" (which I believe means the maximum) VBV buffer size for MPEG2 MP@HL is 1194 KB.

i have learned that the aspect ratio relate to the input pixel ratio which in my case is 1:1 not the whole picture aspect ratio which is 16:9.
Also the video system should be set to PAL or NTSC , what ever is appropriate , so that the DVD / media player knows what time to display. When I chose video system: unspecified the time clock went wild and it often stuttered at the start.

my settings are as follows for a Hard Drive based play back of full HD res video.
MPEG file output:
Stream : MPEG-2 Video
Profile & Level : MP@HL
Size: 1920 1080
AR: 1:1
F: 25 fps
Rate control mode: VBR 40000 30000 quality 100 for highest quality
Rate control mode: CBR 20000 for a safer play back at high quality and quicker render
VBV buffer size: 0 (auto)
Video system: PAL or whatever (not unspecified)
DC component precision 8 bit ( I have found no advantage in upping this)
Display mode: progressive ( same as source)
Motion search precision: highest (with error correction)

For adding an ac3 5.1 soundtrack from say premiere etc can be done in TMPGenc tools menu , mpeg tools, multiplexer.
I chose MPEG2 program-stream added the ac3.
