View Full Version : AutoGK doesn't use the DivX codec at the best. Am I correct?

Hi. I just tried AutGK; I am quite satisfied by its performances and its speed, but whan I chose to use the DivX codec I found that the resulting AVI didn't have the best quality that DivX can achieve.
Well, with respect to the movie I can do by myself (using VirtualDubMod+[AviSynth+DGIndex]) : I need more time (about 5h every DivX pass on a 1h30' movie) and I obtain better results.
I then used XviD and I found that its quality was a little higher.

What I noticed was that using DivX the AVI creation time was about equal to the movie's length. (i.e. , on my PC, 1h 30' for a 1h 30' movie). Using XviD the encoding time were about 30% more.
I wonder that this could be the case that AutoGK uses DivX in 'Encode Performance' = Standard instead rather using it in 'Encode Perforance' = Slow (higher encoding time, better quality).
Since XviD hasn't this option, the faster encoding (and slightly lower quality) counld be due to that issue.
I even ooket at the 'hidden' options (CTRL+F9) and I didn't found the way to alter the 'encoding performance'.
TThis might me a good add-on to AutoGK.
Am I correct? Otherwise, I cannot epxlain to myself why DivX movies are slightly worse and slightly faster (in encoding) than XviD movies and, more, why both XviD and DivX are faster than the one I reach and, more stangely, 'Using DivX' is even faster than 'Using XviD'.
Ah, to bee more precise: I use XviD v1.0.1 and DivX Pro v5.2.

the thing is that AutoGK uses only those codec settings who will guarantee highest performance on StandAlonePlayer's ... thus, it doesn't take all bells 'n whistles of both possible codecs into account...

@ Fred: and that hasn't anything to do which codec he's using... to be honest, I believe that DivX 5.2 is better supported by AutoGK as any other newer version of it ;)

@Fred:
...and Xvid has arrived at version 1.2, so v1.0 isn't so obsolete.....

but downloading the latest full package of AutoGK and installing it with the latest (bundled) xvid version doesn't hurt :)

one thing to remember... uninstall xvid first and than install AutoGK

P.S.: where is Fred's post???

The xvid 1.2 is multithread so quicker for dualcore happy owners (like me :) )
The 2.40 uses last and updated filters, see changelog here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=393221#post393221

Yes, this will prevent not so funny problem like undersize etc...

P.S.: where is Fred's post???
I suppose he has completely deleted his post. It is really disturbing :scared:
I really would prefer something like "Post completely deleted by the author" with eventually the reason for deleting so that I will not search everywhere a post that does'nt exist anymore :o

I was provocative so I deserve it :D

Now if you wait second quarter of 2007, the E4300 will drop to +- 130€ and with a Dual VSTA 775 at +-55€ you can re-use your DDR Ram and AGP card; see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120509

Still in test :)

wow, very cool... I can keep my RAM modules (2x 512MB PC2700) and my AGP card (ATI Radeon 9600 Excalibur 128MB DVI/VIVO) but will have a dual core cpu and an up2date mainboard for ~ 200€ ?? you're kiddin' me :)

I will probably have to upgrade my power supply... any recommendations??

I cannot be kidding you cause "it has been reported I have (nearly) no sense of humor" it's in my sig :D
I have reused 2x512 Corsair DDR PC3200 and a 9600XT Excalibur see also this post and following: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=948439#post948439

I will probably have to upgrade my power supply... any recommendations?? I am very happy with my Fortron green 400Watts, it has good reviews for efficiency 80%+ , low noise and accepts the 2600Mhz overclock.

Better post in the hardware thread if more questions cause I would not like to pollute this thread.

Sorry for interrupting your discussion, but I repeat my question:

I noticed that on my PC (which so far has installed the DivX5.2 codec), AutoGK creates not much beautiful DivX AVIs, while it creates very nice XviD movies.

DivX quality looks like if I had set, on my DivX 5.2 codec, the "encode performance" = standard, while the best quality is given by "encode performance" = slow.

I saw that on new DivX6, the encode performance 'standard' is now the MOST PRECISE, while the encode performance 'standard' was a little worse, in DivX 5.x.

Could someone explain me if the not too high quality of the AutoGK DivX5 encoding is due to the fact that it uses 'standard' performance that is optimal for DivX6 but not very beautiful for DivX5?
If this is the reason (I cannot find other reasons, since all AVI movies I made using XviD 1.0 and 1.2 are very good) can I instruct AutoGK to use well DivX codec, or I will be forced either to upgrade up to DivX6 or to stick to XviD?
