View Full Version : A Question on Lossless DVD Extracting

After a little research I've come to the conclusion that lossless DVD encoding simply isn't feasible (please prove me wrong though).

As all the methods I have discovered actually increase the file size of the file I have decided to try to simply extract the movie as it is and not do any encoding. My question though is how do I extract the movie, not as a VOB file but as a standard MPEG-2 file (seeing as DVDs are MPEG-2 I am assuming that this is possible) that can be run on most software.

Any help at all will be appreciated.

Use DGIndex or ProjectX to extract the video from the VOBs.

Use DGIndex or ProjectX to extract the video from the VOBs.

Just to be completely sure, the result is the exact same quality as the original? Video, Audio, everything? It will essentially be lossless correct?

DGIndex doesn't transcode the audio or video, it simply copies it. You will need to remux the individual streams into an .MPG file, which again can be done losslessly.

Vob2Mpg will do it:

VOB2MPG is a very simple, easy to use, tool to convert the vobs files found in DVD folders (VIDEO_TS) into normal mpegs which can then be played, edited or reauthored.
