View Full Version : Antec Neo PSU Incompatible With Some MSI Boards?

I'm using an MSI 761GM2-V SiS761GX chipset board, and got odd results attempting to power it with an Antec Neo 550. Case power switch would not shut board down when depressed, would not boot, no graphics, no power to HDs, optical or floppy drives. Same PSU seems to work well with other boards.

Installed a cheap Ebay PSU I use for a spare and testing, MSI board and drives work fine.

I've heard of this sort of thing before, but never experienced it personally. One would think PSUs would be similar enough that this wouldn't happen.

What is the likely cause of the incompatibility?

Hmm... sounds fishy to me. Try again ?? :)

Checked it more than once. I have given up and am using the el cheapo supply for now.

I had a nearly identical problem, but I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you. I only post this because it might in some way help you make a connection. I recently replaced a Soyo motherboard with a Gigabyte, and couldn't get the new board to power up at all. It acted just like you described. I always thought the extra 4-pin wire from the PSU was for Intel boards (mine have always been AMD), and I never used it. This one, however, needs the 4-pin plugged into another not-so-obvious port on the board before it would power up.

Right. A lot of Athlon64 boards need the ATX12V (P4) auxiliary plug to even power up these days. My stupid frakking old ECS board had it at the very top of the mobo - very bad when you have a short cable and psu mounted at the bottom like in my p180.

Still, sounds like you would have thought to connect it, given that the generic PSU works.

I guess there is some sort of incompatibility, though it's difficult to say exactly what. I bet the Antec guys would say the same thing :)

I had an Intel board with the extra 12V port, but unfortunately, its not that simple in this case. I just keep a fire extinguisher and RMA form handy in case the mystery brand $30 PSU explodes.

I got tired of Intel's massive power consumption and heat issues and gave in to the lure of AMD myself. The 3800+X2 has unseated my Pentium D 820. Its nice to have a CPU with a cooler that just snaps into place like a child's toy and doesn't burst into flame when performing virus scans. Still love Antec though, can't beat the quality.

Thanks to the ill-fitted one and my old pal CWR03 for responding.
