Hi everyone!
today i installed a Avermedia capture card on my pc to transfer some vhs videos to dvd, its working fine but as i went to use Windows movie maker i realized it wasnt encoding it wouldnt go any further than 0% encoding, my xvid/divx programs report divx and xvid are missing altough i have them installed, im guessing the aver media capture software messed up my codecs, what should i do? i formatted my pc about 3 months ago, do i have to do it again, or will a simple uninstall/install of the codecs solve the problem?
Thanks

Hi!
You might want to perform a simple "System Restore" back to the last date things were working properly...

Hi Setarip_old!
Thanks for your suggestion, i personnaly avoid "system restore" as i end up with duplicate files all over the PC, it is a easy solution but i was hoping something else could be done like installing the codecs again but since they are installed i dont know what effect it could have installing them again.
Will it "damage" the PC installing the codecs again and more important will it make them "appear again"?
Thanks

i personnaly avoid "system restore" as i end up with duplicate files all over the PCThat's certainly your prerogative, but I'm not aware of any duplication resulting from a "System Restore"...

... I'm not aware of any duplication resulting from a "System Restore"...
You are now, twice it happened to me, i have a lot of dv footage and it duplicated the files that by themselves are big and on other areas of the pc files were also duplicated.
if you could answer my last question......
Thanks

i have a lot of dv footage and it duplicated the files"System Restore" only re-installs system-related files (in their previous condition and at their original locations), certainly not "dv footage".
Perhaps another member can offer you additional insight regarding your problem...

Whats happening here? i asked something about x situation and now my words are being questioned? Setarip_old just because you know more stuff me doesnt give you the right to question the authenticity of my words, as i said i performed a system restore twice on separate ocasions and it did duplicate video files i transfered viua firewire from my Sony handycam theres no "only's" it did do it, you might know more stuff than me but it did happen so please dont imply that im lying. Thanks.
Fred thank you for you suggestion, will try it out

If you have gspot you can go into "view" and you can view both video and audio codecs currently installed. Problem codecs will be highlighted in red. It's a good way to start off, I think.
You can also manually uninstall codecs from the "run" command under start>run.
type " regsvr32 /u "codecnamegoeshere"
but obviously replace "codecnamegoeshere" with the codec file name without quotation marks.
example:
regsvr32 /u ff_vfw.dll
I'm assuming you're trying to "import" a video into windows movie maker, because I don't think it outputs anything but .wmv and you're 1st post said dvd. dvd is mpeg2 program stream, not wmv.

so please dont imply that im lying.I have absolutely no idea how you arrived at that.
I suggested that you are mistaken.
I simply stated a fact (check with Microsoft or do a Googlesearch) - performing a "System Restore" does not alter, eliminate, or duplicate non-system-related files...

Maybe you ran into the old problem where uninstalling a certain ffdshow or XviD build results in a registry problem. It might have been foxyshadis whose post contains the missing registry entries you can import to solve it. EDIT: Here's the thread with a solution: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=114077&highlight=ffdshow+disappear%2A+codec%2A

Sorry, what i meant was dvd as a storage device the videos would actually be mpeg2 352.288, that i also was trying to import to windows movie maker to convert to wmv to upload to youtube(smaller size).
Setarip-old, im not mistaken it did duplicate files, i saw it, after doing system restores i looked for the reason of why my hard driv free space went down, i checked the folders where the videios where and they were duplicated with a few more caracthers in the filename. it did do it.
Reinstalling the missing codecs should do the trick.

i havent unistalled anything, all i did was installing the avermedia capture software and running the divx patch for fixing the problm ems the had on the 6.5 release
DivX 6.5.1 has now been released.
Changelog:
* Fix: Stability of DivX decoder under third-party media players and Windows Explorer
* Fix: Settings in the Decoder Configuration Utility/DivX Settings Manager were not always applied correctly
* Fix: De-interlacing was sometimes enabled when it should not have been
* Fix: The feedback window could crash the encoder when enabled
* Fix: The feedback window could be enabled for Fastest and High Performance modes
* New: For compatibility with applications that do not expect the DirectShow decoder to request the hardware overlay, it is possible to enter application names for which the decoder will not use the hardware overlay in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DivXNetworks\DivX\ExtOverlayExclusions (you may need to create this key). For an example see the SMExclusions key in the same location, which allows the Settings Manager to be disabled on a per-application basis.
virtualdub doesnt show xvid or divx codecs.

only one that appears in red is this one:
DSH YV12 Nero Digital AVC Video Enc {426F6A6F-FEF8-4A5B-8DDC-099E7499EF50} 0x00200000 ** File Missing:
it says this about xvid in green:

Do you see the vidc.xvid and vidc.divx keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 in your registry?
