Some satellite broadcasters are using CPRM to restrict duplication of their programming content by permitting "copy once." Dish TV Satellite receivers with built-in DVR automatically capture the broadcast, which appears to block a stand-alone DVD Recorder from being able to record the same 1943 "B" Western from Encore Western Channel on disc (many old movies are not available on VHS or DVD - purchasing these from a "legal" distributor is not an option). If I understand the intent of CPRM, I should be able to make a single copy for my personal enjoyment. Thus, my question - how, given the equipment I've described?

Regarding the provider's intention, the following text is copied directly from Encore's website... "We have agreed to encode our movies according to the guidelines established in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which provides that films on our linear channels can be recorded only once"

I appreciate your observation, which in fact does apply to their "high end" product (which I am not interested in since I can purchase most new releases on DVD). I'm simply trying to capture a few of their "low end" product that I remember seeing on TV some 50 years ago (and they were old then, having been shown theatrically in the early 1940's).

I guess I didn't express myself as clearly as I had thought. I'm suggesting that although they may state that, "our linear channels can be recorded only once", this doesn't mean they intend to make it easy/possible for you to accomplish this ;>}

A very valid observation! The Dish Satellite Receiver's built-in DVR is able to record and playback the "infected" broadcast without difficulty. Obviously, I cannot record from this hard drive capture due to the limitations imposed by CPRM (one time only). I'm trying to determine if there is any way my stand-alone DVD Recorder can be "first-in-line" to receive the signal and record it on a DVD-RW in VR mode. Dish Tech Services offered no help. Insignia's (my DVD REcorder) manual got me this far, but I can't find a follow-up contact for additional information. Any other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
