Mobile Encoder/Zune

Any chance we can get the mobile encoder to support WMV output? I have a zune player and although they say it supports multiple video formats it actually will only play one, wmv. The zune software will play other formats but when you sync them to the Zune it re-encodes the file to wmv so the device can play them. This can take a while as you can imagine.

So basically, if I output iPod files with rebuilder and then sync them to my zune, they get re-encoded to WMV. If WMV support could be added, I could cut that step out and save time.

You should be able to do it but I haven't actually tried. I'd have to know what codec is being used. In the MOBILE dialogs custom settings you can set the file format to "WMV" -- but you'd also have to select appropriate Video and Audio formats. What does the ZUNE require?

Ok that is weird. When I go to custom all I have is:

Video Format: MPEG4, XVID, and H264
File Format: MP4 and AVI

According to the wiki on ffmpeg it will do WMV, so why am I not seeing it as an option? I just did a re-install of rebuilder to see if that would fix anything but I still have the same option.

So I've been playing around with ffmpeg at the command line and I can convert vobs into wmv using this:

ffmpeg.exe -i blah.vob -vcodec wmv2 -b 768 -acodec mp3 -y test.wmv

From what I read you need to use wmv2 codec and not wmv3. I'm not sure if wmv2 is version 7 or 8 but wmv3 would have to be 9 since from what I have read, ffmpeg is not working with wmv9.

Video Format: MPEG4, XVID, and H264

Those are just the default choices. You can type in any of the legal FFMPEG formats. The truth is that the list of possible codecs and file formats supported by FFMPEG is gigantic -- so I only included a couple of the most popular in the dropdown list.

Below is a list of formats shown when you run "FFMPEG -formats". Of course there are lots of specifics associated with many of codecs/formats... definitely more than I know... so anyone deciding to experiment with other formats -- please use caution and remember you may be doing so at your own risk. Remember also, that double-clicking on the FFMPEG Visual Interface while it is running will copy the FFMPEG command line to the clipboard -- in case you want to modify/play with it.

Note, the names of encoders and decoders dont always match, so there are
several cases where the above table shows encoder only or decoder only entries
even though both encoding and decoding are supported for example, the h263
decoder corresponds to the h263 and h263p encoders, for file formats its even
worse
