I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to Adobe After Effects to add some stuff to my home-made DVD.

or if you're willing to go linux, try cinelerra.

or if you're willing to be the young hip designer guy (not the nerdy old guy), get a mac and try shake.

Assuming that your CPU supports SSE2 couldn't you just buy OSX, download a cracked copy and install it on your current hardware? Strickly no need to actually buy a Mac these days.

shake is not a replacement for after fx motion graphic toolset, there is none imho.
