View Full Version : Question about AGK's split options

I could not seem to come up with a search that quite answered my question.

I am encoding my DVD collection for use in streaming from my PC to my HDTV. File size is only important to me in the sense that since I stream wirelessly, keeping movies in chunks of a cd or so is best.

The max cd split selection in AGK is 3cd's, I like to encode most movies at about a cd for each half hour to avoid any type of compression showing up on my HDTV. IS there there any way to change this selection by INI files or something, or is just doing the split myself in VDM my best choice.

A second question while I am at it, why does AGK only do a single pass when setting a quality percentage instead of filesize based? Is it because a second pass is only needed to fit a static file size? I thought 2-pass encoding was always better.

I'm a little curious why you'd split the files if you're using them for streaming, but it's your prerogative. Have you tried setting the file sixe to 2800 MB? I know it'll auto-split at 700, 1400 or 2100.

The percentage-based and filesize-based encoding methods are so different that asking to have one be applicable to the other isn't going to happen with AutoGK. There are ways to use the first pass to determine the file size needed for a certain quality or average bitrate for the second pass, but that's an advanced encoding option, one not meant for ease-of-use programs.

XBMC doesn't really like file sizes above a cd. Even though the limitation has been fixed in some cases, I have not been very successful in getting larger files to stream wirelessly, they just won't start, so I just got into the habit of splitting the files. Lately all my issues with Nero Digital files have come back, so I am trying my hand at Xvid again. XBMC really doesn't like Nero either, plus the audio is better when not using Nero since the AC3 can just be muxed.
