View Full Version : Splicing an avi

OK just ripped a file with AutoGK. I chose PGC2, which was the main movie. For some reason it added PGC3, which was behind the scenes, to the avi before the movie. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to cut out the 9 mins of extras and splice them back in after the movie is over?
I just got VirtualDubMod today to resync the audio for this same file which was -10000ms behind the video, probably due to this PGC3 being added before the movie. If I can use this to cut it out and add it again after the movie can someone tell me how it's done? No experience with splicing. :scared:
Thx a ton!!!

You may find it difficult because VirtualDubMod can only cut in on I-frames, which are sometimes two minutes apart. If you're lucky enough that they fall where you need it, you'll have to save both the behind-the scenes portions and the movie as separate files, then rejoin them. Use the left and right bracket buttons ( [ and ] ) to set the start and end points of each portion to be saved. Hold the Shift key when scrolling to find the beginning of the movie, which will only display the Iframes in the preview. Once you have the two parts, re-open the new movie file, scroll to the end and click File > Append segment to add the other file.

VirtualDubMod didn't work. I was able to make a separate avi for the behind-the-scenes part, but the main movie part wouldn't line up right. I marked it where I wanted it to start but it kept starting like 10 seconds prior to where I marked, I presume because of I-frames.
Is there no program that can splice precisely where you want it to?
I shouldn't even be having this problem the behind-the-scenes was PGC3 which is not even what I ripped in the first place. I have no clue how it got added before PGC2 which was the main movie. I wasn't even aware you could rip more than 1 PGC at the same time and have AGK auto-splice them into 1 avi for you.

Because of B-Frames. Rather than try and find the place by the picture in VDubMod, find the place by playing the movie in a player. Note the time, and then find as near to that time as you can when you open the movie in VDubMod. When you get close to the time, advance and go back by keyframes (the 2 gold key buttons along the bottom), and you'll see the possible cut places. You can't cut on any frame you might want, but only on key frames. You still might not get exactly where you want to cut, but only within 10 seconds or so.

Is there no program that can splice precisely where you want it to?

No, not without reencoding the place between the two closest keyframes.

I wasn't even aware you could rip more than 1 PGC at the same time and have AGK auto-splice them into 1 avi for you.

Next time decrypt using DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode, and select the movie only, rather than decrypting the whole thing in File Mode. Or use RipIt4Me in Movie Only Mode. That way you won't get the other PGC.

Doing this, the point I needed was at 9:45. I was able to use the keyframe buttons to go to either 9:40 or 9:50. Figures. The 9:40 starts the movie with 5 seconds of something no one will understand and doesn't look good. The 9:50 misses 5 seconds of dialog as the movie starts immediately with people talking.

So you're saying rip the movie vob's to the HDD first then use that to rip the avi from? I've never done it like that before. Of course, I've never had two PGC's ripped and combined automatically before either.
I'm gonna try to rip it regularly overnight again once more and if I still get the two PGC's I'll rip the movie to the HDD first.
Thx everyone for the great help! :D

Well, you haven't explained yet just how you're doing it. But set up DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode (up at the top, mode->IFO), decrypt to the hard drive, and that way you'll get the movie and nothing but the movie.

Alternatively, if you already have the entire DVD on the hard drive (decrypted in File Mode), you can use PGCDemux to "Create A PGC VOB" of just the movie.

I'm just trying to use AutoGK to rip the movie to avi directly from the DVD. Tried again overnight, but it messed up again. The movie is PGC2 but for some reason it keeps ripping PGC3 as well and places it before the main movie. I'll try to rip just the movie to HDD and use that to create the avi and see how that goes.

Hasn't anyone ever told you that's not very good for the drive?

As you've discovered, AutoGK isn't so good about encoding only the chosen PGC when there's more than one PGC within the same VTS. So stop doing it that way.

Nope. This is the first thing I've heard that it's not good for the drive.
