If two discs are two parts of the same movie -- like a Lord of the Rings movie spread out over two discs -- could I somehow back those up as one continuous disc without an interruption?

Not really -- you can use DVD ReMake to join them -- but they wouldn't be continuous. The only way to do it would be to reauthor completely. The biggest problem comes from the fact that you will have repeating VOBID/CELLID sets on each of the two discs -- making it difficult to join them.
I've done it before by writing a quick program that went through the second disc's .VOBs and changed all the VOBIDs. I then renamed the .VOB files so they appeared to be a continuation of the first set. Then I used IFOEDIT to create new IFO files. It ended up being movie-only, but it worked.

@Jeff Mott
Hi!
If, in fact, you are willing to settle for a movie-only structure, this can be VERY easily accomplished by using the "Join" function of DVD2One (commercial program) in "seamless" mode...

I have combined 2 dvd's, movie only, with DVD Shrink.
I recently combined Wyatt Earp, Kevin Costners 2 disk version, with Shrink.
All you have to do is make one ISO of each dvd with Shrink using No Compression (movie only) to your HD.
Then, using Shrink, you use the 'Open Disk Image' under the "File" heading of Shrink. Once you load the first image and move it to the left hand pane of Shrink, you then click the "Re-Author" mode.
You then open the next ISO image and move it to the left hand pane of Shrink. After that, using no compression, you then make one big ISO of the now combined 2 DVD's. Finally, you run the large ISO through DVD Rebuilder to get a great backup on one DVD.
One more thing, I did use the 'Start/End Frame' (arrows icon) to trim the 'fade to black' out on DVD disk 1.
There is more info. on combining movies HERE. (http://www.dvdshrink.info/compilation.php)
Hope this helps...as it is very late at night here and I am going to bed.

But feedback, don't you get 2 titles when combining two disks with DVD Shrink?
I think Jeff Mott wanted (and many others too :)) 1 title with all the chapters from disk1 and disk2 combined. That is why jdobbs renumbered all cells and renamed the vob files of disk2.

Well that's what I get for posting so late at night.
Yes Sunhillow, you do get 2 titles the way I described.
P.S. Well, I do have to add that after all that, I do still get seamless play from the combined DVD's. As a matter of fact, the only bad thing for me is, I can't jump around as easily in a chapter search. Other than that, you won't notice the transtion between the two titles when watching the DVD:)

I have used this (http://all-star-computers.net/dvd2dvdr/joinclip.html#joindbl) method on movies such as Goodfellas, A Time To Kill and The Pelican Brief. Then processed with DVDRB. Comes out beautiful.

Another way to do it movie only style is
1: To combine all the VOB's you have just converted so you can burn them on 1 DVD do the following
2: Rename the VOB's you want to merge as VTS_01_001.VOB, VTS_01_002.VOB, VTS_01_003.VOB, VTS_01_004.VOB ect.
2a: Move the renamed vobs to the same directory
3 Open the first VOB in VOBedit
4: Click "Edit-Join Clips"
5: Next you will be prompted for the destination directory for the combined files. The program will start combining the files
6: Once combined, you can close VOBedit
7: Run IFOedit and select "Create IFO's"
8: Select your VIDEO_TS directory and your 1st VOB file for your new IFO files for the "Output Stream" box. Keep the destination directory the "Same as source"
9: Once done, close IFOedit and open IFOedit again.
10: Open your VIDEO_TS.IFO file and select "Get VTS Sectors" click OK until done.
11: You may now close IFOedit .
If you then want a menu with chapters, run it through DVDLab.
cheers

it can be accomplished using DVD remake and appending to the same VTS with Chapter menus intact from both DVD's, but needs change of navigation and steps are too cumbersome to explain in plain text.
I'll see when I can release a guide for this.

@ron spencer
But if you use "TMPGEnc DVD Author", won't you lose subtitles and all but one audiostream, or has v.2.0 now overcome these deficiencies, that existed in all previous versions up to and including v.1.6xxx?

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3.0 will support 2 subtitle streams.

This is good news. I just hope there is an option to prevent transcoding.
Another option to join DVD discs is with VobBlanker.

Violating rules 1, 2, 3, and 6 not only in your first post, but a single sentence. That's quite an accomplishment.
Read the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

Bah...I meant 1.6...that is what I use...duh on me.
Yes you do lose subtitles, but I never care for them anyway. This is movie only; and one stream only....sorry for not being more accurate..Bah on me!!!!
V1.6 joins seamlessly and perfectly....I suppose you could remux the subtitles and other streams in and re-author, but for my purposes I never use them and do movie only backups of english 5.1 and no subtitles. So V1.6 is perfect for me.
Now I suppose you could also demux all your streams and use Video Redo as well right?
...and 1.6 doesn't transcode!!!

Try looking at PGCEdit, it has a tutorial that does exactly what you are looking for
But you can also use the DVDShrink method, just use reauthor mode and add both titles, then disable automatic compression so its basically a DVD created with nothing touched, you'll get a warning about it being too big for a DVd but ignore that
Then just run it through DVD-RB
The good thing about DVD Shrink is the basic editing, so you can remove the start titles and even most of the end titles and save yourself about 20 minutes, which will increase your final bitrate
But, I wouldn't do it on a single DVD, you'll have to use DL, it can be done, but the quality drop is huge, as you're trying to compress over 10GB to a single 4.32GB
Even if you use 7 passes, its a massive quality drop. I did it just to see if it can be done, its not worth it

Hi!TMPGEnc DVD Author 3.0 will support 2 subtitle streams. If you delve a little further into the Pegasys webpage announcing this version, I believe you'll discover that it's presently vaporware (The "Buy now" and "Download trial now" buttons are not active)...

Right, it's not available yet. Thats why I said "will".
I'm happy to see that they considered adding subtitle support in a future version.
Another way to join a DVD is to open all the vobs with DGIndex. Then have DGIndex demux to a single video stream and demux the audio streams. Then author with MuxMan. Process with DVD-RB.
With a bit of manual editing you could retain menus by using PGCEdit to import the new PGC created by MuxMan.

I followed some of the information provided here or linked to. I used VobEdit to renumber the VOB IDs of the second disc, and I renamed the VOB files to continue the first disc. I now find myself a little lacking in information and guides for using IfoEdit. Is there a way to update the disc-one IFOs with the chapter information from the disc-two IFOs and still retain menus and special features from disc-one?
