View Full Version : What Virus-scanner do you use?

And does it meet your approval, and why in any way above all other scanners?
I myself use Nod32 (my registration expires shortly)
It never finds anything (knock on wood, maybe it's for the better)
But I am thinking about switching to Kaspersky.
But dunno if this is a wise idea.
This thread is for personal experiences and comments about any scanner out there
ofcourse ;)

I use the AOL one that is free for all and actually made by kaspersky the best AV out there today. Just don't install the security toolbar as there are questions as to what that contains. Plus use a free junk email as they are allowed to give out your email per the agreement. Here is a link to the discussion of it on Anandtech.

With NOD32 having won the most awards the next one down is Avira. I installed it on the other computer and I must say it is really good. Fast, doesn't take up much resources and free. For a free AV, I now only recommend that one.

you should really pay more attention to reliability and quality of the software than the time it takes to install your anti-virus software :D

I use ClamAV; I have it primarly for use as one of my sendmail milters for incoming e-mail, and, I do use it as an individual file scanner, also. Since my main OS isn't MS, Apple, or Linux, I don't scan unless I have a need, such as approving archive attachments on this forum.
When I run W2K, for about 3 apps, I use AVG Free.

I'm guessing he's using one of the *BSD's. Personally I'm waiting to switch over to DesktopBSD, when 1.6 is released, since I have no experience with FreeBSD.
Let me get back on track.

Fortinet wifi (http://www.fortiwall.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=757&idproduct=4910). Hardware firewall/router with tons of high-end features, including all-protocol antivirus.
Various models run our entire network now. Personally, aside from a few quirks, they're the best and easiest networking hardware I've ever used. Pick a few up!
(I have another against my bookshelf and another in the car, since my company bought more than it needed. :p But business is starting to grow again, and I might have to give mine up sometime.)
I hear you can do a stripped down version of the same thing with newer hacked firmwares for cheap linksys wifi, though.

Have you tried SW from Comodo (http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html). I use their Firewall, but I had problems with the antivirus. The realtime scanner didn't work and I couldn't find out why. I think that most of the other free antiviruses and firewalls are free only for non-commercial use.

AVG Free from GriSoft is always a great free choice for good virus protection. For commercial, I'd recommend NOD32, not only for the numerous awards it wins, but it also leaves the smallest memory footprint, and is very very efficient. Don't forget about online scanners like TrendMicro's HouseCall when the system is suspect!

i use Avast free.
i recently installed ClamAV on a freinds for him and that seemed to be ok aswell.
scanning was done with the free tech protect
http://www.tech-pro.net/tech-protect.html
Tech-Protect 4.1 provides on-demand scanning of drives, files or folders, automatic scanning of files that are written to disk or opened from the desktop, and real-time scanning of emails as you download them. It also warns you of potentially suspicious changes to files.
EDIT: added tech protect info

yes another program had to be installed for that(it uses clamav) but i couldnt think of what it was called at the time i replied. i planned to update that post when i found out, and i have. as you can see tech protect does have on-access scanning.
as i also said ot was for a freind ,not me. 1 reason i wouldnt install that is the version of clamav tech protect uses requires .net 2. he had it so it made no difference to him. i dont and have no intention to. it is funny how that clamav proclaims it doesnt need the cygwin dll. hmm wonder which is bigger, cygwin dll or .net ? ;)

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)
An anti-worm program is something I don't really have any use for (good internet surfing habits I guess).. but it takes so little resources I can't even notice it running. And not to mention it's FREE for personal use too.

The free ones arent much chop. Either use NOD32 or Kaspersky for proper detections. I found Kasperspy's proactive defense and general loss of system performance a PITA and settled on Nod32 which is lean and mean and very effective.
Nod32 is very good but there is probably truth to Kaspersky being updated quicker which is important. For me on balance NOD32 is the one I use.

I don't use any antivirus. I used to have NOD32 but it never detected any virus so why do i need an antivirus? Now and then i do an online scan but it never detects any virus, only a few tracking cookies... I only install programs that i can trust so there is no need to have an antivirus. They only exist to consume large resources of your computer and do nothing...

I thought free expires on the 15th?
They essentially expired the old version and forced a replacement.
I used it until my new provider offered McaFee security suite for free so I'm trying it now...just the AV part.
I used AVG free for quite some time. I found it had cases where it couldn't clean infected files (in zips or rars) so I learned to keep an eye on the test results. But never a problem with it ;-)

Avast!
I used to have Norton AV, Trend Micro, Panda, but why should I pay for sth that's only a bit better (if at all) than a free software? Apart from that I don't like the way Norton (goes for all the other Symantec's products) and Panda go so deep into system, and leave whole lot of rubbish after deinstallation. Norton even killed my rather fresh Win2k install once (I still can't believe this, but it did).

If you are running Windows, a virus scanner is a must. Your system is guaranteed to be infected with something sooner or later.
I use AVG 7.5 because it seems to do the job, and perhaps most importantly of all...its free!! (I'm cheap) :D

Since independant tests have shown time and again that the free malware solutions just dont compare to the payware ones, I doubt the validity of people claiming otherwise.
Nod32 or kaspersky is the secure choice.
