game wise the 8500 is ok, but if you play videos using overlay with it, you're gonna get quite a color show. the overlay on the current drivers and even the last driver set really stinks. all videos give wierd colorful swirls in areas of brightness. even the overlay controls for the 8500 are disabled in advanced video options. video playback tv out doesn't work with overlay on either.

Whats OS are you using? Did you upgrade from an Nvidia based card? Ive heard that might cause problems. A friend of mine has the 8500DV and we didnt notice any overlay problems. You might want to try a clean install, which doom has reminded us several times, it recommened when you upgrade your hardware. If your using XP try this maybe it will help. Good luck.

this is off a fresh install of win2k. my friend who has the exact same card also has the same problem. he tried from a fresh install of both xp and 2k, and same result. with overlay disabled, video playback is horrible (video can't refresh fast enough during high action scenes, resulting in shuttering effect).

i'll see if the driver you posted works for my friend. i would try xp, but microsoft found it no longer necessary to support my scsi card in xp, so all my cd/dvd drives and scsi lvd hd won't be available if i switch...

looks like its time to switch to a ti500...

I think I know the effect you mean...

To clarify , does it manifest itself as harsh transitions in colour (in the form of bands) in dark areas of the film?

I'm not convinced that it's completely gone now, but I improved mine by changing the gamma slider on the overlay property sheet from 1 to 0, but it's only activated if the overlay is in use.

New drivers were required to enable the overlay property sheet though.
