Hi there!
I converted my old Video 8 cassettes into DV-AVI files with the final purpose to put everything on DVD (and keep the DV-AVI files for future High Definition disc)
I came out with more than 600 GB, which is what I expected.
I have some minor editing to do to the DV-AVI files, like cutting, trimming etc. and I want to do it directly on the DV-AVI file in a lossless way.
What is the best and simple tool I can use to work them out without re-encoding?
Thank you
Alex

Look for a DV video editing program that does Smart Rendering. Smart Render will only re-encode transitions or added special effects sections, it will not re-encode trims or video with no special effects added.
I like Ulead MediaStudio Pro. It is expensive, but I there is a trial version. I found the SE version cheaper bundled with a firewire card. The lower cost Ulead VideoStudio also has Smart Rendering.

If your DV is type2, I believe you could use VirtualDub (free) in Direct Stream Copy mode.
Someone also posted a free DV Trim program in the DV forum section.

Hi VD,
I used Windows Video Movie to capture and if I well remember it is DV-Type 1.
However, I will give a try to the Solveig freeware application, it might me enough for my purposes.
Thank you

I had a bunch of Type 1 DV files that I was able to open up in virtualdub without any issues. Doing a direct stream copy converts them to Type 2. (That is how I've been editing.) This should be a lossless and safe process, right?

If you need to convert between type-1 and type-2, then look at the freeware listed in the Links sticky.
