So my father has seen some of my backups with DVD Rebuilder and loves them...so he is thinking of buying it....but 1st on the list is a new computer.

So...he does not want to spend too much so is looking at:

1. P4 hyperthreaded at 3.2
2. Pentium D (cheap now!!!) 2.8
3. Core 2 Duo 2.5 I think

I think the Pentium D (first generation) is fine for his uses....

are there experts who know what he is missing by NOT going to Core 2 Duo...I know it is cooler.

In all cases though both dual cores are faster than P4 right?

I think DVD Rebuilder will be good for just the D...

any comments?

Here are my experiences with CCE speed on all the CPU's mentioned:

P4 3.2, 1 gig Ram - 3.1-3.6x
Pentium D 3.0, 1 gig Ram - 4.0-4.5x
Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4, 2 gig Ram - 5.9-6.9x

With all other encoders, the Core 2 Duo with the Extra gig of memory, is almost twice as fast as the Pentium D.

Hope this helps.

Just to add some more info. on the core 2 duo laptop, that I have, that may be of some use to you, or others for that matter, in choosing a computer.

Core2Duo, T5500, 1.66GHz, 1 GB ram = CCE speed 4.2-4.8x
