I am experimenting with TMPG as opposed to convertX2dvd to see if there is a massive quality difference and in doing so I am encoding the video separately from the audio and I have no idea how to encode the audio. I am encoding an avi file and I loaded it into VDUBmod to get the file info and under audio it says MP3 so do i encode using besweet wav to mp3 so that i can reauthor it later? Thanks.

dvd-video doesn't accept mp3. You can convert mp3 to ac3 with Aften for example.

What about just using besweet to convert from wav to AC3 will the sound be ok then too?

No, don't use besweet to compress to ac3, or you'll have an extremely low sound; use After, an up-to-date program.

Hi,

This seems a crosspost of this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120491
Crossposting is not permitted by the forum rules, see rule8

In addition to Susana's answer, yes Aften accepts Wav as input for ac3 output; so does Belight (which can also use Aften) with some adaptations, see the Belight thread for it.

Happy new year

Edit: Or Behappy which is more complex to get running but has more possibilities

boy this stuff is confusing, what exactly do i need then and how do i determine what to convert to? Should i convert to mp2 or ac3? IN what situations would i choose either or? I know it probably depends on the source but i'm sure there are reasons for chosing which one

Plz, make a direct stream copy of audio in VDub (1st possibility), thus extracting the audio track, or install AVI-Mux GUI and save the audio to mp3 (right-click menu on the file) -2nd option. After that google and launch Audio Identifier or MediaInfo to take a closer look at the internals of that mp3 file (CBR or VBR? what encoder? which encoder's revision? bitrate? etc).

If you provide us with such detailed info, I think we can give some answers - AC3 or mp2 and bitrate. Remember, you can't make a wonder out of sh*** ;) E.g. if the mp3 is like 128kbit/s CBR, then you won't be left with much choice ;)
