Hi,

I recently captured video from my old Sony Handycam CCD-TR416 8mm video camera. I was surprised to see wavy video throughout most of the capture. The video was captured with a Canopus ADVC-100 and iMovie (OS X 10.4)

I have uploaded a sample clip that exhibits the waves. Does anyone know how to get rid of these, or even what causes it????

Thanks

oops...almost forgot.

The zip archive is ~4.5MB and is password encoded. The archive contains one avi file that is compressed using the mjpeg compressor from ffmpeg.

The password is: wavy

That link isn't working - I can't even resolve upload2.net from here (are they down?).

What kind of waves are these? Could you post a screenshot? If it the mis-alignment of horizontal lines (most noticable down the edges of the picture), then you may need a time-base corrector to sort it out - unfortunately no good software implementation of this exists :(
Don't know how much of a problem this is with 8mm tape, but it's very common with VHS recordings and gets even worse with duplicates.

It definitely looks like horizontal instability. Maybe the drum speed was changing a bit during all the camera movement? A TBC would be the answer.
