vob to avi

I would like a guide to convert a VOB to AVI,and what converter is best to use.a stright one to one would be good, as i am new to this.thanks for any help you can give me on this xbill, a noob

Assuming you have the proper/desired codec(s) installed (e.g. DivX, XviD, etc.), my personal favorite for simplicity of use combined with high quality results is "MPEG Mediator".

BTW - Asking "What's best" is inappropriate at the Doom9 forums (It's stated clearly in the rules)

I want to convert my vob files that I got from DVD Decrypter to mkv so I can have the options of english or japanese audio and subtitles. Obviously I have some anime.

On another forum they said I have to convert the vob files to avi first and am going to try mpeg mediator to see how it goes. Anyways I was wondering if when I convert them to avi will I still have the audio choices and subtitles. And after I convert them to avi how do I convert them to mkv. I am very new at this since I just brought a dvd drive. So can anyone help me out.
