DVD Rebuilder & Cinema Craft Encoder running in Linux Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 This set-up currently only works when configured using Winetools, which also breaks VobBlanker and PgcEdit.

I can not believe no one else has tried to get this running in Linux. My next step is going to be CrossOver Linux from CodeWeaver's and see how that works.

I managed to get the Free version of DVD Rebuilder listed at Wine HQ

I did try it out but no success with DVD-RB PRO (I'm a VIP user). I'm currently running wine 0.9.29 . Could you elaborate a 'mini HOWTO' learning to configurate DVD-RB FREE through winetools (with screenshots if possible)?

Thanks in advance,

I've gotten cce working under wine quite a while ago, but imho I much prefer native apps such as mplayer, mencoder, transcode, ffmpeg & a really great program I found written in perl, dvd::rip
when a really great open source alternative is available thats the way I go, if not then of course wine will have to suffice

The problem with Winetools is that it is quite dated and does not work with newer versions of Wine. I will post the links to the Ubuntu forum and the guide I used. Also some of the links for Winetools are now broken and you need to manually install some dll's to get Internet Explorer to download. Plus another downside to Winetools is that it breaks some of the other DVD programs I like to use.

@lpn1160 I am still fairly new to Linux been using it for about 8 months now mostly Ubuntu and so far am very impressed with it , but still have a lot to learn. I have dvd::rip on my set-up and will check it out in the near future. How does it work with the newer Sony and Macrovision Rip Guard movies?

@danpos
Ihave finally got DVD Rebuilder working without the use of Winetools thanks to the help of Moonboots at Digital Digest. Here is the link to the thread which tells how to get it going. I will be working on a guide very soon, let me know if this works for you.

@wildchild77

I did follow the Moonboots at Digital Digest and got success to have both DVD-RB Free and DVD-RB PRO working on my Ubuntu 'Edgy' box (wine 0.9.29). Take a look at these screenshots:

1. DVD-RB PRO getting started:

2. HCBatch.exe in action (take a look at the window on left bottom) and in the conky output:

Thank you so much to point me out at DD forum. :)

That's what is so great about the Linux community we are all willing to work together to find the answers to the problems. Linux is a great OS and will only get better. I have found a lot of help at the Ubuntu forums and continue to learn more everyday.

<OFF-TOPIC>

1. conky (get it with synaptic - since that you're using Ubuntu).
2. lm-sensors (get it with synaptic).
3. Take a look at these URLs: (a) (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205865) and (b) (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SensorInstallHowto).

Enjoy it!

Out of interest can anyone confirm if there is a great difference in performance between running DVDRB with HC on both platforms?

wildchild77
18th January 2007, 13:21
On Windows I would say they are very close with CCE being faster. On linux I have seen no difference in the quality on what tests I have ran so far. This is still a fairly new set-up and needs more testing but it looks good so far. The only reason I got started on this project is to move away from Windows, especially with what I have been hearing about Vista!

thanks for the info. if DVD-RB and HC run just as quick on linux as it does on windows i might be tempted to jump ship too :)

Here is a rough draft of my guide, no screenshots yet. I would really like some testers to try it out once it is finished. This is still a work in progress and any and all input will be appreciated.

DVD Rebuilder in Linux using Wine

This guide is for DVD Rebuilder Pro or Free on Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 and the latest version of Wine. I will also cover the installation of DVD Decrypter, Ripit4Me, and ImgBuurn. VobBlanker also works well using this set-up.

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

Configuring Wine
Most of the most common configuration changes can be done with the Winecfg tool.

1. In terminal type:
winecfg

2. Change the setting under tab "Applications" for Windows Version to "Windows NT 4.0". DVD Decrypter needs this setting.

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wine01.jpg

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wine02.jpg

3. Select the tab "Drives".

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wine03.jpg

4. Press the button "Autodedetect" to let Winecfg automatically detect the drives available on your system.

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wine04b.jpg

5. On some systems it might be needed to also select the device letter for your DVD reader/burner and then press the "Show Advanced" button and then set the "Type" to "CD-ROM" in the drop-down list. When you are done, press the "Apply" button.

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/wine05b.jpg

6. You are now done and can press the OK button to close down Winecfg.

Downloads
You will need the following DLL’s mfc42.dll, msvcp60.dll, advpack.dll, asycfilt.dll, comcat.dll, msvbvm60.dll, oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll, stdole2.tlb. All of these need to be placed into the .wine\drive_c\windows\system32 folder

1. Download and install DVD Decrypter

2. Download and install the Ripit4Me installer from the official site!

3. Trespasser’s NO DVD fix. Open up your text editor and type “Welcome to Ripit4Me” then save this file as “Ripit4Me” Create a new file named “TempIFOs” and place the Ripit4Me text file inside. All you need to do now is copy and paste the TempIFOs file into .wine/drive_c/windows/temp folder

4. Download and install DVD Shrink

5. Download and install ImgBurn

6. Download and install Cinema Craft Encoder, I use CCE Basic and it works great.

7. Download and install the DVD Rebuilder installer, If you plan on using the pro version you will need to request the key file via e-mail (dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com). Just make sure you include your registered e-mail address and the SYSTEM ID that is shown on the registration screen. After downloading the key you will need to place it in the .wine\drive_c\Program Files\DVD-RB PRO folder

Next we need to set oleaut.dll to native by running winecfg

8. Under the Applications tab
Add application from menu ie Rebuilder.exe

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/11216.jpg

9. Under Libraries tab
add oleaut32 and edit it so it is " native " windows only , click apply etc.

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/11217.jpg

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/11218.jpg

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer15pr/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/11219.jpg

10. It's also a good idea to first run both DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter before you run RipIt4me for the first time. Insert a DVD in your DVD reader/burner and check that they can detect the inserted disc. If this works, then you should have no problems with disc detections/readings in RipIt4Me. If you get detection/reading problems, check the settings in winecfg.

I have been testing this guide on Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 and it seems to work with only a couple of small issues. Now that Ripit4Me is no longer being updated, I have also been working on getting DVDfab HDDecrypter working with this set-up. No luck so far the program installs and opens ok, but will not detect the drive. I am always looking for testers or input from others who have gotten this to work.

I am going back to Edgy 6.10 until they can fix Feisty, There are several problems on my system including freezing at start-up and DVD drive not being seen or auto mounted. Feisty seems very BUGGY where as Edgy just WORKS!

in Feisty I can get a "successful rip" with DVDFab but the output is for the most part pure pixelaited garbage. Otherwise everything else works great except Feisty uses the latest version of wine which breaks shrink(at least for me)
Got Shrink to work in feisty 7.04 by copying Quartz.dll ver. 6.3.1.881 to sys.32 and setting to native. Also set riched20.dll to native while I was at it

Something has changed in Rebuilder Pro from version 1.26.6 to 1.27.1 which has broken the set-up on Linux using Wine.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Rebuilder 1.27.2 is a no go as well, same error as posted earlier, after installing the program will not open. For now I will keep using 1.26.6 until I get the time to dig into it. I will post a bug report over at WineHQ and see if anyone has a workaround for this.

Try talking to jdobbs directly. Either PM him or go to the DVD Rebuilder section of the forum.

1.27.1 and 1.27.2 both dont work for me. CrossOver Mac with 1.26.6 working perfectly as per the instructions found on this site. Guess i will keep this setup as is until it gets resolved.

I was able to get the free version to work, but I'm having trouble with 1.28.2 Pro. I have tried with several different versions of wine, but I keep getting the same error popping up after I click "back up DVD." The error message reads "DVD Rebuilder experienced an error when attempting to open DVD." The Log is pasted bellow. Let me know what you guys think the problem is.

Let me know what you guys think the problem is.
I think it may be a combo of ripper and file system saved to.
I have several rips stored for viewing and 2 of them show the same error. Unfortunately I don't recall the ripper.

to test maybe take a problem title and rip with a couple of diff. rippers to a couple of f.s.'s and see which ones open and which don't.

In the meantime what 'solves' the issue is to move the ripped folder to a ntfs partition.
Ex.
Title A on ext3 won't open. Move to a ntfs partition it opens, move back it won't open. (seems nonsensical

In general no problems using vobcopy to ext3 (with caveat of not remembering prog used on the 2 problem rips

Edit: it's not the ripper, appears that certain titles when ripped to an ext3 partition can't be opened in rb.
Tested a title with no structure protection - ripped to ext. 3 can't open, ripped to a ext2 partition opened, ripped to a ntfs partition opened

It does have something to do with the ripper for me. RB gave me the error mentioned above when opening VTS files from Ripit, but when I use DVDfab all is well. Any idea why RB would have problems with Ripit under wine?
