View Full Version : DGIndex reporting wrong FPS
Error
2nd January 2007, 00:43
I have ripped several movies in a row now where DGIndex has reported that FPS incorrectly. DGIndex is listing everything as 29.970 even though the actual fps was 23.976. Is there some kind of setting I am missing or is this a bug? I am using 1.4.8.0. If this is a bug how can I determine the actual fps via another method?

Why do you think DGindex is wrong? If you are using VirtualDubMod, that is the one that is wrong, because it ignores RFF flags.
Anyway, all NTSC DVD rips have to be 29.97!
If you have pure soft 3:2 pulldown, you can use Field Operation = Forced Film, and then you'll get 23.976 in the served video. It's all described in gory detail in the user manual.

Well because if I use 29.970 then the audio is off and incorrect. If I use 23.976 then everything is fine. I am not using vdubmod btw.

>if I use 29.970
Use 29.97 where???
You're not giving me enough details to understand your problem. Describe your ENTIRE process, including all tools and settings.
DGIndex is not reporting the wrong frame rate!

Well first I rip the DVD using DVDecrypter. I then loaded the ripped .vob files into DGIndex and hit F5 for a preview to get the necessary info I need. Then I save the project with demuxing the main audio track.
I then load the ac3 file created by dgindex into besweet and encode the audio into AAC as an .mp4 file.
I then encode the video using megui into AVC using x264 as a raw .264 file. After I mux the audio and video into a single mp4 file using megui mp4 muxer. Since DGIndex said its 29.970 I specify that as the FPS.
After muxing completes I open the final .mp4 file and play it to find the audio is way off. So I remux the audio .mp4 and raw .264 again using 23.976 even though dgindex said the video is 29.970. And too my suprise the audio is in sync with the video even though it shouldn't be.

I don't know anything about megui or megui mp4 muxer. But I do know that DGIndex is not reporting an incorrect frame rate. I suggest that you repost your issue in the appropriate megui forum. Maybe megui is enabling Force Film.

I recommend you to read about telecine (or 3:2 pulldown). The 23.976->29.97 is by means of repeating fields in a way that duration doesn't change. In some step in your process you are doing inverse telecine, so frame rate is 23.976 and audio remains the same. Dgindex is an essential program and works correctly obviously.

the correct framerate is: 30000/1001 (that is 29,9700299700299700299700299700...) so dgindex approximation is quite good.
also the correct framerate for telecined is 24000/1001 (that is 23,9760239760239760239760239760...).
however a better approximation would be 29,97003 and 23,97602. That will ensure no desynch on very long sources.
