with regard to quality of pictures on compressed dvd's. (as in dvd shrink)
how come an AVI file that can be like 10% of the origional size be looking almost as good as a DVD Shrink backup where copy could be 70% - 80% of origional.

DVDs use MPEG2 compression, and AVIs can use almost any codec, including MPEG4 (XviD), more efficient. Also, the quality standard of a DVD is usually largely superior, and the image is in full (or sometimes half) video resolution.
