If my source is black and white content, are there any special settings in CCE, or avisynth, or perhaps in matrix selection, that would help DVD-RB to encode this material?

Hmmm... nothing comes to mind.

thanks, wasn't sure if there was anything special like when doing animated or CG source.

if your source is B&W you can use GreyScale() in the filter editor.

Using GreyScale() is a good idea. I've seen a number of old movies encoded with rainbow artifatcts (especially in men's checkered suit jackets). GreyScale() will get rid of the rainbow.
