Hello all. I recently gave my dad my dvd burner (a TSST aka Samsung/Toshiba with 4x DVD+R DL/16x DVD-R) for his new media center in the hopes of buying a newer faster one that can do 8x or 10x dvd+r dl's (i burn A LOT of dual layers, probably 4-5 a week and most of the time on the same day so as you can imagine speed is a nice thing to have). Ive been spending the past few days researching on here and on google whats around now and what has gotten the best compatibility ratings with other devices and im looking strongly towards NEC, specifically the ND-3550a (http://support.necam.com/optical/nd3550a.asp). the most recent reviews i found in google however were from mid 2005 and the ratings on newegg for most of the current drives left me a little skeptical (lots of "doa's" and coastering, that could be user error though). I use all Verbatim discs (dl's, dvd-r's and cd's) only since as many have said, they work the best and are most compatible with other systems.
So the questions are, does anyone have this drive and would be willing to say that yes its good/bad or have any other comments about it?
Are there any other drives out there with better/comparable compatibility scores (obviously subjective but I'm looking for opinions in case I'm missing something)?
My only stipulations for the new drive is that it has minimum write specs of 8x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-R and 48x CD would be nice but i would settle for lower...just not too much lower...like 40x at the lowest. I think with the current state of affairs those specs are very reasonable. The only other thing which would be nice is LightScribe technology, but im not attached to it...would be a fun gimic to play with though.
Thanks in advance!
