I have been using Staxrip to encode mpeg-2 files captured from a Hauppauge tuner. I noticed it's been a while since Stax has been updated and was wondering if others here think I should move to MeGui?
Is it harder to setup or use? Would I get better quality results?
I tried installing it to try it out but came across 2 early problems. I would usually troubleshoot but wanted to know if it would be worth it for me first...
1. Neroaacenc file could not be updated. I have the latest Nero version but do not know what file I need to copy and to where to copy it to.
2. How do I actually input a video file? It looks like it need an AVIsynth script.

I really like megui when it works correctly.
Use the avisynth script creator in the tools menu.

I guess my main question is if the quality or speed from the latest MeGui would be better then the older Staxrip?

MeGUI doesnt influence quality or speed.
Those things depend on the codec you choose, the settings and the avs script.

Are you wanting to encode to XviD or X264?
What format is your input file? d2v, avs, avi, vob?
Have you looked at AutoMKV? It is quite a bit easer to use.

I know that MeGui and Staxrip are only Front End GUI's.
I know that the quality doesn't depend on them per say. But Staxrip has not been updated since 5/1/06...
Does MeGui have a newer version of X264 that might be faster or of better encoding quality?

All my files are mpeg-2 files and I encode them to *.mp4 using X264.
No, I have not tried that program. But will give it a look.
I am looking for the simplicity offered by Staxrip and will stay with it unless somebody tells me that there is a better of faster way with an updated program using newer versions of programs.

Trying out megui is a painless process really, the best answer is simply to use it for a few encodes and see if you end up preferring it.

You can download the file here:
http://anonym.to/?ftp://ftp6.nero.com/tools/NeroDigitalAudio.zip
Extract and put the .exe in the megui/tools/neroaacenc folder

I noticed that Staxrip seems to be the only one to use DivX plus for H264 encoding. MeGUI has more tools/options/control whereas Staxrip is a bit easier to use. Staxrip muxes the video and audio for you but in MeGUI you have to just use MKVMerge afterward to mux the audio/subtitles, unless of course automated muxing can be set up as a separate job in MeGUI.

megui/tools/neroaacenc folderIt can be any directory. Path to neroaacenc.exe set through "Options" - "Settings" - "External Program Settings".
p/s: MeGUI nice ;/

Latest release was a month ago, I've not worked on StaxRip since then and plan to pause for a few more months. You don't have to worry much about lack of updates, a lot popular applications are out of development for years but they work now as good as before. If there is a new version of a certain application used by StaxRip you can update it yourself if you think it will work better. I hope there won't be compatibility problems, if so people can always mail me.

... and you can always download latest version of applications and put in staxrip in applications folder and they will work 99% since all command lines options are most of them always the same. Maybe staxrip will tell you that is untested version and if you having problems while encoding just put original back :)
