Audition not importing XVid files

I am having trouble with Adobe Audition. I am trying to import an avi file so I can sync the audio but it refuses to import a XVid file. It keeps saying the following when I try to import a video file:

The selected file does not contain video data, is not a supported video file format or the video codec required to open this file was not found.

Every other program I have works fine and can open XVid files okay, I do have ffdshow and XVid codecs installed.

I even tried installing Audition on another windows installation and that had the same problems and that only had XVid installed.

Will Audition not import XVid files?

Surely the documentation and/or clicking on the "Help" dropdown menu provides such basic information as "supported file formats"?

It says that avi is supported, but avi is only a container from what I understand. Whether that means it supports DivX and more importantly and commonly XVid is another matter. It does not mention this. :( The documentation is a bit limited.

Try it with a DivX-compressed .AVI...

I have tried a DivX 5 avi file and that did not work either. It gave the same error as the XVid did. So it looks like Audition only works with regular microsoft Avi's, which makes it pretty much useless.

I will try and find one of those to make sure I am not doing something wrong just to rule it out. It is finding one of those that will be difficult as I do not know where I would find one and how to tell them apart.

I does seem stupid though not supporting Mpeg4's.

Create an .AVI with a different codec, just as you have with XviD and DivX codecs...

Searching google, people have mentioned that it does not support Mpeg4 (XVid/DivX). It was supposed to be supported in 1.5 but not 2.0. This is a serious omission in my Opinion.

You should probably email the publishers at Adobe. As a paying registered customer, you have a right to know, with certainty, if and why this is the case...

Thanks but it is a trial version. But after my experiences, I would not purchase it as it is far too limited. I will have to look elsewhere I suppose. Do you know of anything that could do a better job of dealing with Mpeg4 files and allowing me to alter the audio to adjust sync etc. Some are very badly out of sync and require far more than a stretch/compress. The file I am trying to fix has major and varying sync problems, I think that someone made a hash at attempting to correct it and it has created a lot more work than it would of otherwise been. :(

Do you have AC3ACM Decompressor installed?
and or also AC3Filter.

It started as needing AC3ACM for TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to
recognise VBR mp3 within AVI's ..way back on my Win'95 box.

Got an XP box upgraded CoolEdit 2k to Video Collections v2.5
with Adobe Audition v1.5. Had yet to install AC3ACM decompressor. Couldn't dragNdrop XviD's into the MultiTrack
View page. Got around to adding it what I thought was just for TMPGEnc low and behold I could now import & dragNdrop.

Install AC3Filter as well.. found I could dragNdrop AVIs w/AC3.
Caveat: must have speakers setup 'as if' you only have Two.
It ends up downmixing to two channel stereo.

Tried Audition 2.0, playback of the video is very erratic.
Times indicated were different than using V1.5

Mind you here Audition would import UN-COMPRESSED AVI's
w/o the need for those filters.
