View Full Version : Best bitrate/settings for TV capture?

I have a feeling that this is a loaded question, if there ever was one, but here goes:

I am setting up a system which (among other things) will capture TV programs, in a DVR mode. I would like to save these recordings as mpeg-4 to save space and I was thinking Xvid, because that's what I have experience with and it seems to work well.

This will be standard definition stuff (640x480) and I'd like to record it at relatively low-loss quality. Basically, I'd like it to look as good as it does on TV or relatively close to it. Roughly DVD quality. Good enough quality that it can be viewed on a full size TV without any noticeable artifacts.

Since I don't want to set up a different bit rate and codec configuration for every program I record, I'd like to find a sort of generic setting that will work well for tv recording.

I have a good amount of storage (1.2TB+), so I'd like to air on the side of quality. However, I also do not want to use space needlessly if it's not going to make any noticeable difference.

Therefore, my question: What bitrate and codec would be sufficient to comfortably record all TV programing, with minimal loss, but without being too overkill.

first: re re re read the rules
second: use the search button
third: just a tip try with "Target Quantitizer" at value 2.5
