Okay, so i start watching a video, pause it, start playing a game, exit out of the game and go to watch the video - no dice. The media player screen reminds me of the HOM effect back in the days of doom and only the sound plays when i hit play. Anyone else experience this?

What player? I've used a bunch of players that have done a rainbow of things.
Besides, even though modern computers are technically called muti-tasking they aren't %100 cut out for it when it comes to running several "big" apps at once.
I always close every Memory/Cpu heavy program running before playing a game.

MPC is the player i use. I think it has something to do with DirectX... but it happens no matter what output mode i use. I've got a dual processor machine with 2GB of ram so having a media player idle in the background isn't very taxing on resources.

I'm not sure I completely understood you but if you meant you're having trouble playing videos while playing computer games what I do is change Video Renderer to "standard Overlay". That way most videos work except mp4 for some reason.
i use zoom player but it should be the same in mpc.

In general, I believe you'll discover that game programmers have very little consideration for how the game may affect memory locations required for other programs' requirements.
I'd suggest that you should presume that games should be played with nothing else running on your computer...
