View Full Version : Problems with MPEG

Hi all
Im using a Grabster AV400 to dump the contents of VHS (PAL) onto my hard drive to go to DVD. All my editing software captures in MPEG2 and this is not a problem - I'm not going to edit it, just transfer it to disc. In another part of this forum I was advised to use TMPGEnc DVD author, which I need to change the MPEG to VOB. But every time I try and import my MPEG file DVD Author tells me it's not MPEG1 or 2 and that it's an "illegal file format". I was also advised on this board to use the free TMPGEnc to convert any unaccepted file formats to TMPGEnc acceptable ones, but this won't accept them either. What's going on?
Help!

Hi!
Use of the freeware version of TMPGEnc to process MPEG-2 files requires the purchase of the TMPGEnc MPEG-2 plugin...

Hi setarip_old
You answered my last post! Thanks for your thoughts again.
After our last discussion I have sourced TMPGEnc DVD Author v1.6 and it looks fab as if it will do just the job. It says, though it will only handle Mpeg1 or 2 files, which is fine as my stuff generates Mpeg2 files. So why won't DVD Author accept them? Do I have to pay more money to use the free TMPGEnc to make my Mpeg2 files into Mpeg2 files that DVD Author will understand:confused:
I'm more baffled than ever, now ...

So why won't DVD Author accept them?Because (As I believe I told you in another, earlier thread) the files must be DVD-compliant with regard to both video and audio - and running them through TMPGEnc, using its "Wizard" to select the DVD template, should make them DVD-compliant and acceptable as input to TMPGEnc DVD Author...

I 'll tell you why (I m not completly sure is that the case, but that is something that happened to me). OK, download AviCodec, this is free tool which gonna tell you in which codec is your video. Open the video and see if there is "mpeg-2" video codec or something else. You know that is actually mpeg-2, but in header can be something else wrote. I have similar problem with elecard muxer and adobe encore dvd. Encore didnt open this file couse header sais that is "elecard mpeg-2" but not "mpeg-2". Maybe this is the same problem.

Thanks. You did, and I tried , but the free one won't handle my "Mpeg2" files either - same error message. So are you telling me that if I get hold of this plug-in it will accept my "Mpeg2" and everything will work OK? If I can get everything working right it will have been worth all the hassle.
Hi dexy
Thanks for that - I will try it and see if it is a real Mpeg2 file or just some dodgy video file masquerading as one.
Thanks both for your wise words.

Hi setarip_old
OK. Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it. Just one last thing - where can I download it from? I found this site :
http://avlab.myetang.com
I think this is the plug-in you're referring to, but it's all in a foreign language (Chinese???) and I can't read it. I also found a link on this forum direct to the .zip archive (http://avlab.myetang.com/soft/m2v_vfp-0.5.6.zip), but it just takes you back to the home page. Do you know of a mirror site i can download from or anything?
Thanks
DominicB
EDIT : Forget all that - I've just found what you're referring to :

Thanks!

Congratulations on your find! - but I wonder when the MPEG2 plugin became (Per the posting at the "Videohelp site for which you've provided the link) "freeware" and was bundled with an MPEG cutting utility?
