Whenever i select or double-click an x264 video in explorer, the explorer crashes by giving these error messages (1st error message picture attached below).
The 2nd message is that "windows has encountered an error & needs to close.....". Does anybody has a remedy to this prob ? I hope i hav posted this in the right forum.

The problem is your x264 directshow filter. Install a stable version of it. A stable version of ffdshow is a good choice.

And remove all codec packs! Especially anything old or including warezed commercial filters. (But have a system restore disk handy, some have uninstallers that uninstall half the system.)

Well firstly, i am using ffdshow 610 generic version & i guess its stable. 2ndly i am not using any codec packs at all. Just using ffdshow as the only filter.

That's M$ preventing you to execute what you want on your own PC. Another unwanted restriction in M$ softwares...
Use linux or disable DEP (:search:). Try also scanning your files with a good antivirus.

That's a randomly (re-) occuring problem with ffdshow. On my other PC (XP1800+), I've currently installed a generic build from iirc early november ... explorer crash / shell restart if I click on certain files, i.e. Huffyuy encoded by ffdshow. "Folder view" is "details" (so no thumbnails), in ffdshow's "don't use ffdshow in:" I have "explorer.exe;", shmedia should be deregstered too ... still I've those crashes. Forces usage Command prompt to somehow handle these files, instead of quickly drag/drop/context menu, heh. Lovely when navigating through deeply nested folder structures.
I'm sure it would be cured by another build, and I'm also sure it will come again with yet another build ...
BTW, anyone remembering the "ffdshow vanishes when selecting the 'levels' tab" bug? Here on this older Celeron 2.6, it's still present. With _all_ builds I tried in the past year (not too many, though), it has _never_ changed: If levels is set to something other than "curve", ffdshow will vanish when levels tab is selected while a video is loaded.
... I really love ffdshow, but the last *fully* stable version must've been before my birth. ;)

Well Sharktooth, i had already scanned my pc thoroughly, so there's no chance of any virus or other malicious content that cud b tampering with my pc. 2ndly, i believe Didee' is right. Also i had disabled the thumbnail option in Folder View dialog box. Still there should b someway of preventing these crashes. ??

uhm... did you happen to install a SSE2 version of ffdshow on non SSE2 enabled CPU?

well i had installed the sse2 version last month & to tell u the truth, it was giving me problems so i uninstalled it & since then i hav been using the generic versions only. I dont know whether the latest ffdshow sse2 version will help me but will give it a try.
