View Full Version : Worries about x264 development!

Hi. I started this thread with one goal: to clarify with the devs why x264 development started to slowdown.
I don't remember any new features, except small ones in rev 574.
Can x264 devs tells me the reason for this slowdown? Except real life issue, or course? Lack of ideas, or something else?

I've said it before (as have others), but you really do remind me of Kostarum Rex Persia and that isn't a good thing.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think is missing in x264? I ask because I have no particular complaint with x264 (mind you, it could be faster, like anything else) but I have more than a few ideas for the guis like megui/staxrip/etc.

@c_d: you just confirmed something that was tinkering my mind for a while ;)
More importantly:
@Romario: x264 devs don't need to clarify anything, they do what want with their project. They could just throw the source code into hell if they wanted (not that I would approve, but ... :p), you wouldn't have the right to complain. Go learn some good manners.
Btw x264 already does quite much (to say the least), compared to other AVC encoding solutions, so I wouldn't even dare crying to have more. Remember: x264 is developped on people's free time, so why they don't have "enough free time" to work on x264 isn't of your business.
Sorry for being harsh, but I'm still surprised this sort of things has to be said once again ...

Only thing that's key missing I suppose is proper interlaced support (i.e PAFF and MBAFF), but that's off the top of my head.
And Romario: don't hassle for specific things or you'll end up like KRP, banned and with a reputation. ;)

You are right.:)

Well, yes. But, I don't want to spread any reputation, good or bad. Interlace support is one of the thing, and speed (in RDO modes).

:D See FoxyShadis' Sig ?
Try transcoding a video clip with an old version and a new version of x264 and it is obvious how much it has improved.

I wish the limits were longer, I have 2 or 3 more that I'd love to throw in there...

:D!!!
Yeah, I hate to just play the part of the echo, but I strongly agree with the sentiment of this forum. Just thank the devs for all their excellent work, and be thankful for what you've got. It's free! If somebody gave you a free sandwich - and one that was better than any other free sandwiches that were potentially available, would you kick him in the balls for not making it perfect?
I think not ;)

Indeed not, he only needs a kick in the balls when things dont work for you and he just says .... you are doing something wrong without eluding to exactly what you are doing wrong.
I really dont understand the original poster though, you get what you are given when its free basically.

All the people who give some things away for free experience this kind of people. For instance: I'm in a students organisation and sometimes we give beer away for free. Every time we do that, there are always people who start complaining about how slow we get the beer out of the barrel, complaining that there were not enough barrels (last time there were 15 50l-barrels to be tapped in 5 hours, for a school of 1000 people), complaining that they were first in the queue and so on. If they have to pay for the beer, we never get complaints about being slow, being incorrect, fights or whatever..
It's just some kind of behaviour a certain percentage of the people show when they get something for free. Please, don't take this people for serious and don't be frustrated about their behaviour. These people don't need a large text where you defend yourself because they won't even read it.
btw, i gave the example of the beer because that sounds like something ordinary EVERYONE wants to get as fast as possible, as easy as possible and as much as possible. It doesn't look like that, but your codec is actually in the same position (if that 'much' is changed in 'good')

hey, where can I get some free beer?
Seriously, this thread is pretty pointless. I've seen aku's reply that he chose to delete again but that reaffirmed my opinion that this thread should be closed.
