Hi There,

I'm sure that this question has been asked before, but after using the search function, I thought it would be safe to post.

I know how to rip DVDs, I've backed up DVDs before (very useful, because they always get scratched so easily!). But now, I would like to make a short video using clips from a dvd and effects and what not.

I will be doing my editing in Adobe Premiere Pro (v2 I believe). What I originally did, I ripped VOB files from the DVDs, then bought DivX Pro, because they gave me the impression that it would be high quality and everything, but after VOB to Div X, it lost ALOT of quality, even when used on the highest settings possible!

I've also tried AutoGK(quality loss), and I downloaded DGMPGDec/DGIndex/DVD2AVI, but that program doesn't seem to export videos at all, much less in AVI format.

Is there a way to convert VOB files to AVI files without losing quality?

I am running a Dell Dimension 4600 PC
With Windows XP Professional
Intel P4 @ 2.8GHz
512 MB RAM

Any help is much appreciated, and once again, if this was already posted, I'm sorry. I looked through the Guides and FAQs, but either I could find what I was looking for or I didn't understand it (lol) :D

Thread transferred to our DVD2AVI forum - it really has nothing to do with decrypting - hope you find your solution there. :)

DivX, or any other MPEG-4, is unsuited for conversion with the intent of editing. You can convert portions of the .VOB to uncompressed .AVI with VirtualDub(Mod). HuffYUV is one example of a lossless codec, and will work with Adobe Premiere.

.AVI is not a format, it is a container. It can "contain" many different types of video, including those compressed via DivX codec.

Use avisynth import plugin for premiere.

blutach,

thanks for moving! :)

CWR03,
Thank you. I will try to learn VirtualDub and export as an uncompressed .AVI

krisq,

avisynth import plugin- how does that work? Is it a plugin that automatically converts the files? and thanks for your help!

I hope you know the basics of avisynth and DGIndex ;).
Just make .d2v project for your vobs and frameserve it through avisynth to premiere. This way you won't have to re-encode or do anything. You can work on vobs directly practically hassle free. Here (http://videoeditorskit.sourceforge.net/) you can find mentioned PremiereAVSPlugin.

Why not split the audio/video and edit in premiere instead of
having to convert to avi? There are lot's of tools to do this
but something like dvddecrypter will split the stream for you
to .m2v & .mpa

:)

Okay. I tried using VirtualDubMod, but when I export it, it skips alot. I just used all the default settings, and I don't know why.

I'm going to try your idea, krisq. I'm downloading the plugin now, and I'm going to try avisynth and DGIndex.

Maxxman,
That sounds like a really good idea! Unfortunately, sometimes the files I use are downloaded from the internet in VOB (eg. a music video, etc.), and I don't have the actual DVD to rip it from, but when I do, I will try that!
