I want to backup my Guyver dvds but i dont want to re-encode them so im going to be backing up to a DL disc. Question i have seen as i have'nt burnt a movie to a DL is after making a image to my hdd when burning in imgburn under tools->settings->write do i tick calculate optimal or do i need to specify the layer break ??

Both methods are good, but to be sure that a cell is really suitable for the layer break, you have to build the ISO with a program that can place the LB correctly. PgcEdit (or ImgBurn itself) can do that safely, but as far as I know, you cannot trust the other programs.
You can also burn directly the DVD-Video files with ImgBurn V2. It uses exactly the same method than PgcEdit for the 32K gaps and the placement of the layer break, and seems to be bug free.

I don't really know if this answers your question, but I backup my movies to .ISO files (main movie only, no compression). ImgBurn calculates the layer breaks automatically for me with no problems whatsoever.

Yes, I forgot to specify that. If you rip the DVD directly to an ISO, you can certainly burn it without problem, as the LB position will not be changed. Obviously, the drawback of this method is that you cannot modify the DVD before burning it, because an ISO is read-only.

Yeah im just going to create a iso with dvd decrypter then burn it, no modifing. Did'nt know wether in imgburn i just let it calculate optimal for layer break of specify like you have to with 360 backups.

DVDDecrypter will create the ISO and a MDS file. Load the MDS file instead of the ISO in ImgBurn, and it will use the same LB than on the original DVD. It needs the ISO too, of course, so, don't rename the files! Really easy.

As simple as that sweet.

And i just leave calculate optimal ticked instead of the specify option.

IMO, that option is ignored anyway if you provide a MDS.

Hmm actually it doesn't! (didn't)

The one in the settings (or via CLI) will override anything specified in MDS or DVD files.

I've already added checks for the next version if a LB position has been read from a DVD or MDS file and it's not the same as the one in the settings.

So at the moment when burning a LB will not be whats read from the dvd ?? anyprograms able to open the mds to see what the LB then i could put it in under specify.

If not i may just wait till the next version.

So, is it presently the case that DVDDecrypter WILL use the MDS information to set the layer break, but IMGBurn WON'T?

If I understood LUK's post correctly, ImgBurn will if the one in the settings is set, but can that be disabled? If so, then it shoud follow the MDS. (I haven't used ImgBurn v2.x)

For both programs, the LB in the MDS is only used if the settings are set to 'Calculate Optimal'.

That's why it should never really be moved off that setting! There's no real reason for it anymore since you can use a plain text .DVD file in ImgBurn with the LB specified (DVD Dec didn't accept those).
