I have got an *.mp4 movie.
I want to re-encode it to DivX (*.avi)
How do I do it ?
Another task would be to cut (delete) certain parts
out of it.
Is there a tools which is able to do that (without
the need of re-encoding?

AviDemux can do both.

Hmm, on the left side in the "Video" drop down box I cannot find an "Divx" entry. So how do I convert an MP4 to DivX otherwise ?

That's because DivX compression doesn't exist. Well, not really, but it is not a type of video compression. DivX is just one of many codecs, which encode to MPEG-4 ASP format. It is not integrated in Avidemux (because of licensing), but there are 2 other compatible codecs - lavc and XviD.
If you have an MP4 file, it might already contain video with MPEG-4 ASP compression. In this case you don't need to recompress the video. You'll save time and quality. The first thing you should do is to use MediaInfo or GSpot to check what audio/video compressions are used in your MP4 file. Then I can tell the best way to convert your movie to AVI with MPEG-4 ASP video compression and MPEG-1 layer 3 audio compression - so called DivX movie (I hate this term).
If you'll need to recompress video to MPEG-4 ASP, choose MPEG4 (lavc) or XviD. Both will create video compatible with DivX (MPEG-4 ASP format).
