I've been trying to convert .avi files to DVD purely so I can watch them on my dvd player and not the computer. Followed you link and used Quenc. The message said AVIsynth error:
AviSource: couldn't locate a decompressor for fourccXVID
on line one of my .avi file.
Any thoughts?
I've also tried using AVI2DVD and it always failed. Is it something wrong with my avi files?

In addition to Fizick's recommendation, check your AVI out with GSPOT: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/quick_start.html

Thanks for all your help. Pookie, I checked out the AVI using gspot and it pointed out no codec. I downloaded XVID (cheers Fixick) and hey ho it all worked ! Converted AVI to mpeg using QuEnc. Think these forum's are fantastic- I'm learning all the time. Sorry, but one more thing though. I'm trying to burn it to a DVD. Have tried DVD decripter, Fabdecripter etc but they don't seem to recognise the files (won't show them when I brouse). Can anyone suggest a good program to get these mpegs onto a DVD? All I want to do is watch them on my TV snagdamit !

Thought I had it sussed- but trying to do the next one with QuEnc and I got another AviSynth error:
ACM failed to suggest a compatible PCM format, again in line 1of the file. Any chance someone knows what this could be? I know I'm grabbing at straws here...
Oh and it looks like my nero will stick it onto a DVD !

check gspot again. most likely there's ac3 audio in the avi, and there's no ACM codec for that.
you could switch "avisource" to "directshowsource" in the script, but that'll solve one problem and probably introduce a million more.
there's an ac3 codec for windows ACM floating around here somewhere. you could try forum search, but bear in mind there's a bit of an art to making it give useful results :)

There are two of them (AC3ACM from fccHandler and one from Valex).

Did you find out what was wrong ?
I'm pretty sure you can just use ffdshow so that you don't have to keep downloading different codecs - even though you probably already got what you need
