Hi People,
I'm working on a short film for my Uni.

I need to "rip" some short scenes from DVD's like Dr. Strangelove, etc. The thing is I don't want to encode the DVD to divx, I want to keep it at max quality.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? What's the easiest way to do that?

Many thanks,
Me.

Hi!

Sorry if I sound like a "wet blanket" but, before discussing how to rip the scenes, you should probably want to research the legal ramifications of using copyrighted material(s) in your film...

It should be fine as I'm doing this for Educational purposes - University work, I'm perfectly fine. If I ever want to broadcast it somewhere then I'll have to clear the copyrights obviously.

thanks,

Perhaps other posters will respond to your request...

Mate, it's under fair use, and with all due respect I need to answer the burning technical problems, not to argue IP laws (in the UK, BTW)

Perhaps use DVD Shrink in re-author mode. You can cut scenes by frame.

I know in Australia this is perfectly fine for educational reasons. As long as you don't show it in public or get any sort of money from it, it's cool As TB303 didn't state which country he was from, I thought I might just give my info out.

There is no indication in this thread that TB303 does not own the DVDs he is ripping or that he is trying to profit from backing them up.

Let's discuss his problem please.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? What's the easiest way to do that? The ripping part is easy. Use DVD Decrypter (or other ripping tool). Then you can use DGMPGDec to serve a segment of the DVD through Avisynth.

But you haven't told us how you intend to include these scenes in your "film". What will be your final format?

Rip with DVD Decrypter and then cut out bits with VideoReDo. Don't know about freeware options though.

DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink (re author mode) and you can set in point and out point and clip away.
